Hasta la Vista

Having moved to Vista, I upgraded back from Vista to XP simply because I would have had to buy:
1. A new PC
2. A new MFP
3. A new scanner

So I asked myself why I need to move to Vista? It doesn't have any extraordinary features without which I will cease to be.

I also notice that some manufacturers are still offering their new models as XP rather than Vista.

Pretty happy with Vista, waited a long time before I bought it because of everything I heard about it but so far I did not experience too major issues.

My older hardware like printer and scanner's drivers I didn't have to worry about since they where already on Vista, guess this might not be true for some 'smaller' brands. Also my machine's specs are pretty high so I don't experience Vista as slow as it might be on a machine that can barely cope with it.

So far the games I'm playing works fine. Some new games and older MMOGs. Also keep in mind that more and more games will start coming out as Vista only, though developers will be stupid to do that too early.

My development tools (I'm a programmer and hobby game developer) are about the only ones that had some issues but I got that sorted by either running them with administrator rights or finding a solution on the software's site or asking my good friend google.

So far its giving me the same as XP with a prettier face and some other niceties thrown in here and there. Running Home Premium.

Been using Vista since it launched. No major problems the early gfx weren't great but that has been fixed for most games.

Very happy with vista and could never go back to xp. I have only had one bsod and this was only when the system was overclocked .

I've never used Vista, but I am very worried by the fact that you need a major hardware upgrade just to get the same performance I currently enjoy from XP. When I upgraded from windows 2000 to XP, I was running an AMD Athlon 1.1GHz. Upgrading to vista actually improved my system performance. That's what I believe an OS upgrade is supposed to do for you. Either improve performance on current hardware or offer some major functionality on newer hardware. As far as I can tell, vista does neither (pretty graphics don't count).

Bought a new notebook with Vista business in June.

(Duo T5300, 2GB RAM)

Actually quite impressed with performance - very few "older" incompatabilities, very fast, no probs so far.

I would say don't "upgrade" to Vista - but if you are buying a new PC/Notebook, you might as well bite the bullet and go with Vista. XP is nearing end-of-life which means no support etc.

I will only buy Windows Vista under three conditions...

1) Microsoft must release a "Final" version... I don't want to install a Beta version.
2) I must be able to buy it for under R100.00
3) Microsoft must remove the WGA and stop treating me like a criminal.

:D

obviously, I'm gonna wait a long time to use Vista ;)

in the meantime I will stick with Windows XP or Ubuntu! :p

http://www.ubuntu.com, or for that better look, www.kubuntu.org :> </end spam> FYI, if you have an intel based mac, it runs beautifully on that hardware ;)
Good grief - why would you want to go and do that?

In fact lets just leave Mac's out of this whole thing. We Mac owners are smug enough thanks largely to the knowledge that we have the superior OS.

Ubuntu . . . on a mac . . . crazy talk . . .

Xp will still be around for a long time until most of the major issues on Vista are sorted out. I have used Vista briefly on a friend's laptop and all I can say is: all that glitters is not Gold;)

Nice gimmick. ;)

So whats next? :) Are you going to tell me that GIMP is just as good as Photoshop and that Open Office really is just as good as iWork (or even MacOffice)? Where's that Aperture or Quark killer that I would also need?

My intention isnt to offend the open source community - far from it - but with all honesty when it comes to crunch time those solutions wont put food on my table. Until that time I cant afford not to be choosing OsX, or even windows, over Linux.

Have you ever tried to get to the Run command quickly on Vista?! :(

Win-R, same as XP?

I bought a laptop in May. At first vista was slow and a PITA. Then, two weeks in, my hard drive died :(. I took the laptop back and it was replaced. Since then I've been satisfied with vista. To be honest, there are not major differences between vista and XP, certainly not enough to occupy the amount of time that has been spent on development.

At first, vista was on notice. i was considering installing ubuntu, then making a plan for Photoshop and the Exchange server we have at work. Now, just as MS likes, inertia has got the better of me, and I'll stick with Vista.

For those on XP though, I don't see any reason to move to vista.

It will eventually get there. MS can't afford for Vista to be the next ME so SP1 better resolve most of the issues people are experiencing. Personally I'm sticking with XP until the end of next year when I upgrade my PC.

same here:)

Vista SP1 is gonna be make or break for M$.

I recently discovered the Luna Elements Blue XP theme (on http://themes.belchfire.net). So now I'll be staying on XP a bit longer since the lack of eyecandy is not so extreme anymore.

What's with Linux? Been using it since 2004 (Mandrake, Ubuntu, Fedora), and that's a bad experience (KDE is pretty though :D ), takes ages to install, crashes everyday, and you wait a few minutes for programs to start. Even my friends who use my PC always ask me why it takes so long to do anything.
Ummm sounds like a classic instance of PEBKAC there.

@bwana, no offence taken re your Linux comments, we all know that Mac OSX is the [-]gay[/-] metro-sexual cousin of Linux :p :D.
