Unfortunately I’m not a huge BMW fan for several reasons, but fan or not, I need four doors. I’m also not keen on a rear-wheel drive. It may be the most fun/purist, but in the wet it’s not ideal. Call me boring, call me a bad driver… I’ve owned both front and rear-wheel drive cars and I want to try an AWD. All that being said, I would love to have the funds to own an M3 one day.
Truth be told, I don’t want my decision to any more difficult than it is so I specifically do not want to test drive the vehicles that are not feasible for me (i.e. two door vehicles/vehicles outside my price-range etc.). I’d rather live in ignorant bliss and not have the opportunity to fall in love with something I can’t or won’t buy at this stage.
To the matter at hand. I’ve been to both VW & Audi dealerships. Audi had an S3 on the floor but couldn’t arrange a test-drive annoyingly. I had a good look around the car and found myself irritated with several minor interior issues. The quality is top-knotch, but the design and placement of certain items did not gel with me. (I’m being OCD here of course). I do like the exterior aesthetic though.
I then went to VW and managed to arrange two R test drives. The first was underwhelming because it was a brand new vehicle - I could only drive it 2km and the salesman was sitting in the back. The second was incredible. Had a decent 25 minute drive on various roads and with no chaperone ;P I was impressed! It does drive extremely well – more power than you need on the road, superb handling and also very comfortable. Although somewhat visually understated from some angles, it is a good-looking car and the interior is quality. Some say it’s “just a golf”, but it does not drive like “just a golf”.
Ultimately, the R ticks the right boxes for me. It’s sufficiently comfortable, it’s incredible when you feel like playing and it’s practical enough to live with every day (fuel consumption, space, 4-doors etc.). My homework has also revealed that it holds value really well, which is important to me and should be to most people who don’t have unlimited funds.
I know it’s the safe choice (some might say boring?), but each to their own. I loved the vehicle. I’m currently in negotiations with the sales person

here is a Golf 7R / Audi S3 Gearbox for sale (as stated by the OP who is a mech most prob, becasue who else would be selling a gearbox) ... you didn't realise that the Audi gearbox is a double clutch gearbox ... you called it steptronic !! it wasnt a mistake calling it that, you really thought it was called that. and you think its an automatic gearbox.

Then you send an article that has been read months ago. It starts by saying the 1M is the better car ... and says the M235i wins their hearts. It like saying usain bolt is the faster runner, but this normal "splinter" guy from a tough life background ran against Usain and came close, and he didnt win, but came close, hence why he wins our hearts ... now you are ignorant regarding English and interpreting stuff? my god.
Then you go on about the parts might be the same but the cars are different. Yes, a 3 year old kid (well some of them) will see an audi s3 and golf 7 together and be like they different. And the grown up will be yes my child they look different but the mechanicals underneath the car are the same, so they basically the same car. The kid will then respond no they different, they dont look the same ... <- this is the argument being had with you.
again here you are now still has not showing a morsel of proof stating otherwise.

-1M being overhyped (you posted an article showing them saying the 1M is the better car ... !? ... and the point that adamr mentioned the 1M is because its the closest car to the M235i which the Golf would outlaunch ... you don't get this ... forgot the M235i winning hearts and emotions of people in the article. and from a technical standpoint the 1M is better, that article said it, heck even mentioned the 1s quicker lap time...)
This forum has been great, there's a lot to learn from people about subjects we were once ignorant about. A healthy discussion on topics like this makes other people more knowledgeable. But people like you always want to be "right". And thats a rotten character to have. There are other threads where you've participated, filled with hate for people, insults to others ... and when you get someone putting you in your place ... you cant take it.

You got some comprehension issues dude. And they didn't say the 1M is the better car - this is the actual conclusion, and is what I have been going on about with respect to the M235i's strengths.

But the M235i is so close in a couple areas that you have to wonder if it isn’t a better car for a broader group of enthusiasts. And I see you chaps ignore where I point out the absolute bollocks you have continuously posted about supposed statements or misinterpretations I have made. Come on, you can admit you got it wrong.
The only thing I have on my to do list is go look for the SA car tests which showed the m235i to be generally quicker than the golf R in 0-100kph sprints. That is the comment I made which adamr called "misinformation".
In the meant time, postmanpot and adamr can confer and try and get their story straight as who is posting what on behalf of whom. Maybe even think of apologizing for all the incorrect statements made about what I supposedly said
