Help! Audi S3 or VW Golf R?

The DSG is the fastest gearbox out there as far as I know. However, I doubt any human being could detect the difference in terms of the respective difference in milliseconds (or whatever it is). And in real world terms, the ZF comes out tops imo.

I liked the audi interior as well; it definitely has a far more modern feel to it than the BMW. Having said that, I found the BMW interior to be a solid and reassuring place to live in, for some reason. And I just love that gearlever. I must find some pics of the M235i's interior; I think some may be surprised.

I haven't tried the auto launch on my car yet either. Maybe I'll do that today :)

Ive havent driven the facelift M135, but i drove the "old" one. I suspect the 235 is very similar.
engine is fantastic, the paddles feel great (odd thing i know, but they feel much better quality than the audi ones), the interior just kills me, dont know what it is, just dont like it.
I know everyone also goes on about RWD, but I prefer AWD 90% of the time.

It might be perceived, but I have noticed a difference between the two gear boxes in terms of speed. Or maybe the delivery of the gear change at least.

Something to bear in mind is that I believe they update the software of the gearbox from time to time, so you might find the "old" 135 gearbox is even better now (in fact, I think they have updated it since I got my car late last year). And I had exactly the same impression with the paddles - the Audi's and Golfs are rather cheap and plasticky, while on the beemer they are edged in metal and feel far more premium.

As for interior, yep, personal choice and all that, but I do agree Audi's is better. However, not enough to sway my decision when it comes to dropping half a bar.

As for the diesel comment, it was in reference to "sensible people" buying VW - I was taking a dig at VW being cheaters on a massive scale; sensible people don't trust companies like that...

My humble apologies. I was looking at the BMW November 2015 2 series pricelist online (http://www.bmw.co.za/download/pdf/pricelist/F22_2 Series_Coupe_Pricelist.pdf). There are several columns and the M235i is mentioned twice (one is coupe and the other convertible). I was incorrectly looking at the convertible.

Unfortunately the 4-wheel drive thing is still the overriding factor for me, and as mentioned in the original post, value-holding is paramount. I have my doubts over whether the BMW will retain it's value as well as a Golf R. Nonetheless, it looks like a machine. It's probably more fun to drive... M cars usually are. But I'm trying to balance the fun/performance aspect with long-term financial considerations. Two doors would also not work for me unfortunately.

The Golf does come with the standard 3 year/120 000km warranty and 5 year/90 000km service plan. It doesn't have a maintenance plan standard but that's not the end of the world.

Managed to arrange a test drive in a brand new R tomorrow (it wasn't easy!), so will see how that goes! Whilst I'm there, I'll shoot across to Audi and see if they have an S3 on the floor. Sounds like I need to experience it in the flesh to make an informed decision, although it may just confuse things :confused:

Ok man. You do what you gotta do. Just so you know - I was really focusing on the Audi S3 - sedan or hatchback. Thankfully they did not have any available at the time. I spread my wings in terms of what I was willing to look at. Rest is history.

I still think you should just try one - even if only to confirm you want the R. What do you have to lose?

Actually - the more I consider your posts, the more I reckon you are just a VW/Audi salesman. Why do you want 4 wheel drive over anything? Why are you talking about "resale value" being paramount"? As for "shooting across" to Audi, you sound like you are part of the dealerships in N1 City in CT?

Maybe I am just paranoid... :)

Plenty of them around here. They are a different breed and for them style and individuality are unimpprtant. They get excited by practicality and resale value. It really turns them on.

It is a classic fanboy defence 101 tactic, the don't mock it until you try it. Had loads of it back in the days when people still thought the iPhone and BlackBerry had a fighting chance.

By that measure none of us are allowed comment on the 2017 Lincoln MKZ or 2017 FIAT 124 because we have never driven it.

Anyways, none of that changes the fact that the S3 and G7 are boring. You know what else has excellent resale value? School textbooks. Does that mean they make a good read? No.

How do you know that? Based on what other people say, what you have read and possibly seeing it.
for the most part, most motoring journalists etc believe and review the golf r to be spectacular. Those who drive it say its spectacular, but you seem to paint every single VW with the same brush. The drive it retort i dont think is actually a bad one, maybe you can label the car's looks boring, but you have no idea how it drives.

Yeah, that stupid iphone, how badly it tanked...

You can comment on a car you havent driven, you can say it looks crap, or that engine is possibly not strong enough for the weight. You can comment on the chassis or the brakes, but you cant actually say anything about the drive.
Looking at a car on paper can also be a bad thing, the gt86 is not the most on paper impressive car, but its been a fairly good hit with lots of enthusiasts enjoying it.

I love driving cars, and i dont know why you limit yourself from possibly enjoying or experiencing something pretty good because it has the wrong badge
 
I am biased towards Audi as I have owned a few. For vehicles that are so closely matched in terms of performance it is likely to become a function of availability in the colors and with the the options you prefer. Likely the Audi has the better build quality and more (pricey) options, but only you know how important that is to you.

Enjoy your drive, both fancy cars
