Help, connection problem

Again, thanks for the info guys... seems i've been having the same probs as everyone else.. glad to know i'm not a unique individual :D

We're busy investigating. Will revert as soon as we know what's going on.

Just to clarify, people outside of the Cape are also seeing this?

I've experienced the same problem the past two evenings at home, in Boksburg. It's obviously a problem with the DNS servers?

When will this be resolved?

No, not the DNS servers.

When you connect to the network, the network will 'push back' your IP settings, including the DNS server IP's.

What's happening here is that, for some reason if you're on the 'default' profile you're not getting any DNS settings and the dash then reverts to a default setting.

If you set your apn manually to 'internet' you get the correct DNS IP's pushed back.

To be quite honest this is extremely baffling. We're busy tracing.

Is there anything that we can do in the interim to be able to surf the net?

Change the APN settings from Auto to manual and make sure internet is set as the APN. Worked for us. :D

Wow seems a really widespread problem and get absolutely no joy phoning the call centre thingy! They dont even know there is a problem....go figure.
I noticed that I could not access certain websites directly by typing in the URL, but if I went to it via Google, I could get onto the site, but not download anything...

Looks like this problem has been sorted out.......

Either setup your 'internet' APN manually.

Or upgrade your software from VMC Lite 2.2.1 to VMC Lite 3.2.1 or full VMC 9.3. These downloads are zero-rated on the Vodacom website, so you don't look any of your data bundle.

I'd choose the upgrade path, why people are using older software, is quite surprising.

I'd like to find out if this DNS issue has affected anyone else other than people with VMC Lite 2.2.1 or lower??

Well my modem is only about 3 months old, so I havent even looked if there is newer software
and it worked for 3 months, including the afternoon before it stopped

It worked fine until Monday evening...that's when I started having problems

Thank goodness for this forum!! I started having the same problem as above by Monday evening... got home from work and couldn't access any sites, even though there was a connection. Checked again yesterday, and still nothing. Same thing still this morning... hopefully this will be sorted when I get home tonight.

I'm in Johannesburg btw.

Hi Guys
I now getting a "connection error: A connectionto the remote computer could not be established, so the port used for this connection was closed. for further assistance, click more info or search help and support center for this error number"

2 things:
there is no 'more info'
and no error number

VMC Version: 2.2.2.1
What I have done:

Removed all modems from ports (I had up to 4)
Uninstalled VMC Lite
reinstalled and still getting the connection error

How can I resolve this issue? I have 18+mg of data available.
yesterday morning was fine, got home and started receiving this annoying little bugger, still getting it.

Thanks guys (apologies if on wrong thread, feel free to sort me out or need more info)

Also had the same problem. There is a problem on the Vodacom network. How do I know this? Got the info on myBB. You have to upgrade the VMC lite software to ver 3.2.1 and the firmware update as well.

Thanks Vodacom for letting us know about the problem and what we can do about it . . . NOT!!!

The problem was not on the Vodacom network but rather an old configuration setting in old versions of VMC Lite.

I don't have a problem when a network goes down. Understandable as sometime or another something always goes wrong and can happen on any SP network, MTN, Cell C, Neotel or Telkom. The problem is with the hundreds of people that don't read myBB tech news. Gosh, if I had not read about the software upgrade I would not have known to do it. Thats the issue I have. VC not informing us that we need to do this.

Did you call 155 when you got the problem? What did they say?

Is it Vodacom's responsibility to inform customers of new software releases? Like when hardware manufacturers inform it's customers of new driver and software releases? New ATI or nVidia drivers, or whatever drivers. Does MTN let their customers know of new software releases for their modems?

Usually I go and check the manufacturer's websites for updates to my hardware on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. I've never gotten informed by said manufacturer "Please update your hardware's software with this new version that has been released."

A newsletter might be informative? But would people read it?
