The problem is really simple:

1. I live at the end of a cul-de-sac in Illovo, Johannesburg.
2. On the other side of the street, behind the opposite houses, is the Telkom Wanderas exchange, not even 150 metres from my house.
3. Because of old technology/routing/whatever the cause, my ADSL lines gets routed instead to the Rosebank exchange, exactly 5.2 km's (cable length) away from my house because I am on the opposite side of the road.
4. Because of this I get constant line sync issues, speed issues etc.

I've been a Telkom subscriber since ADSL was first released and have always dealt with this problem, its only now that I'm playing online games that it seriously affects me. I have tried EVERYTHING, sending Telkom letters, bribing employees to get hold of their bosses, nobody seems to know whats going on or how to fix this: a simple telephone pole at the end of my street would fix the problem.

Any help or suggestions would be so greatly appreciated

For some downgrading is not an option - especially if you are running a home based business.
Good luck dude, Id say try and keep calling their ADSL department, and ask to MOVE your port to another exchange.
Your number will have to change though.
Reason I say this is because I am having to do the same thing, and have now actually reached a helpful person on the other line - I asked for a techie to come out, and asked the techie for their cell number, which they gladly provided.
I now supply said techie some beer whenever I run into him, and we get along nicely - all is good.

Thanks for replying Arthropoid... the port changing isn't the problem—there is NO ROUTE to the exchange across the street from me. That is the problem. I don't even use the landline.

Good luck trying to let Telkom move you to the DSLAM that is closer by. It took my office about 5 months before we eventually had ours moved.

Your last hope is to request a business account install and in the request stipulate that the connection must run on the other exchange.
Telkom Business has more decision making power regarding infrastructure changes.
Once it's in, cancel it and get a normal residential account on the same line.

i reckon if you're that far away from a multiplexer 4meg is going to be a problem, heck even 640 kilobit might not be stable. apart from trying a lower profile i dunno what else
