Hi Everyone,

I bought a iphone 4, from the U.S (ebay), which is locked to AT&T network. I need to borrow a AT&T sim card to get past the emergency screen so that I can get the phone online to unlock it.
Does anybody in Johannesburg area have a AT&T sim that I can use for a few minutes to activate via ITunes?
I would be very grateful if you could help me out!!!

You can PM me thanks!

I've had people unlock a phone for me at Bruma fleamarket..... then you dont need the sim. Was about 2 years ago.

Hello !!!!

Now That you are registered you can post more often :)

I sent an AT&T SIM card to a member in CT who had a similar problem with a 3G - it worked, so I guess that he will want to hold on to that.

Go and buy one of those phonebook SIM cards that people use to transfer contacts etc between phones.

Apple has already patched the loophole, but apparently you can get around it?

Basically with one of those phonebook sims as they call them, your phone will activate, and then you can jailbreak and unlock with ultrasnow.

I saw that however i think i will battle to find a phonebook sim card in SA ? Anybody know where I can purchase one of these ? Even in the U.S they seem to battle to find these "phonebook" sims :-)
After I get my hands on those i need to cut it to fit into a micro sim.

My best bet is still an AT&T sim :-) I dont need to keep it, just use it to activate the phone. I will search for a phonecard sim in the meantime..

I have both AT&T sims, the larger one for the original iPhone, and an AT&T micro sim that came with my iPad. However, I am far away from Joburg. If you don't come right there in Joburg, then I can bring mine up with me the next time I am in Johannesburg - that may be several weeks time though

No offense, but this is why you don't by network locked iPhones - just way too much hassle!!

The first gen iPhone was the only one that was really worth buying network locked, as there were many unlocks and apple could not fix the hardware flaws. But they have given our hacker friends over at the dev team a tough time lately. :)

It is well worth spending the extra dollar for unlocked

Definitely!! And, if we look at countries like Canada or Hong Kong, unlocked is not that expensive!! Can get a factory unlocked 16GB iPhone 4 directly from Apple from for about R4600. Just hope you then have family there to send it to you :)

That is the difficult part. :)

Does anyonek now what the stock levels are like in canada? My colleague has family there, might be cheaper to bring it in from there

Well, actually found 2 blogs stating that they also out of stock. Stock expected in Sept though (no exact date)

My iPhone came with a micro SIM in it ...I guess the fella on ebay pulled a fast one on you...I have one that I can loan you but I seriously need it back...and with only 4 posts and a join date of Aug 10 I'm weary.

Order it online from the Canadian Apple Store (store.apple.com/ca) and have it shipped to your colleague's family there. Just keep in mind that the current wait time for the online store is about 3 weeks...

I have considered it, but I am quite weary to ship a phone across the atlantic again. Before I bought my 2g iphone, I bought another one which never arrived. Could have been a bad seller, could have gotten lost in the shipping. Who knows. I would rather someone bring it in with their luggage and I know it is safe. TIA

True, someone bringing it over is always first choice - can skip import duties that way too :)
If not, then have it shipped and make sure to add insurance onto the package (not expensive) - mark as gift and hold thumbs you don't have to pay import duties ;)
