Henry: Ronaldo Better Than Messi
Barcelona ace Thierry Henry has surprisingly conceded that he believes Cristiano Ronaldo to be better than team-mate Lionel Messi.

There has been an intense rivalry between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi - or at least their supporters - of late. The debate raged as to which of them should be given the title of the best player in the world, with Ronaldo claiming the FIFA World Player of the Year award in January for last season's successes, as well as the Ballon d'Or.

What about next time? This term, the Portuguese star has found it hard to repeat such form and many are tipping the Argentina international to dethrone the Manchester United man.

But Thierry Henry, who played for eight years in the Premier League, believes that Ronaldo is the better footballer right now.

"First of all, you have to take into account that Leo [Messi] and Cristiano Ronaldo are different players," he told Record. "For sure they can play on any position from the midfield up, they both have extraordinary technique, but they are different.

"And, if Messi is scoring more goals nowadays, Ronaldo is a player that has scored more and topped the scoring charts last season.

"Then, the greatness of a player is measured by the titles he has helped his team conquer. Therefore, I have to recognise that Cristiano Ronaldo is better than Leo Messi."

Still, Henry praised Messi, whom he considers to be a player who "can make the difference at any moment".

"When Messi is playing well, he can do things that no-one else can.

"I honestly understand why there are those who compare him to Maradona but I repeat: at least right now, Cristiano Ronaldo is the best. In the future... we will see."

Early

Meanwhile, Henry stressed that it is early to judge whether this squad is Barcelona's best ever: "I am not the one to say that. In fact, I believe that, at this moment, no-one can say that.

"You can praise this team how much you want, you can talk about the numbers you want, but the truth is that we have not won anything yet."

The Frenchman also commented on the impact of Pep Guardiola, who was appointed as manager of the club in the summer and has made the club mount serious challenges for La Liga and the Champions League.

"Guardiola came with his ideas and conquered the dressing room. He made us believe that, if we followed him, we would win things. In return, he only asks for us to work."

All he is saying is that Ronaldo is better cos he has won the awards.

You cant for one minute think that Henry believes Ronaldo to be better. He has prasied Messi all season branding him the new Marodonna and the best in the world.

He was simply saying in the interview that Messi has won nothing so far, and when he does he will be rightfully the best player in the world.

What i think Henry is saying is that Ronaldo rightfully won the award  so until Messi or whoever wins the award Ronaldo will rightfully be known as the best player in the world :sick:

He's still talking nonsense. Messi is the best player in the world regardless if he wins anything (he will anyway as Barcelona are surely picking up the La Liga title). I expect him to pick up the award in January 2010.

agreed, messi will win the award no doubt but I agree with Henry on this one ,Ronaldo has to be recognised as the best in the world until Messi wins the fifa award ,then he will be known as the best player in the world ;)

I don't think it's a matter of him winning the FIFA award - more so than him actually helping his team to titles. That was why Ronaldo was shown the red carpet. Once Barca have a title or two to their names - then he would be considered a success. Which I agree with. David Villa will never be a great unless he moves to a side that challenges for titles - and ultimately wins a few! (for example)

I disagree. The award was for last year's performances. So its more a case of Ronaldo WAS the best. Whereeas Messi IS the best right now. He will without a doubt be picking up Fifa and Ballon d'or awards.

You have to give credit to Ronaldo though because even though he's not having a great season he's still scoring a lot of goals for the Mancs

Exactly. Even when he's playing "terribly" as some people have said, he's still at about the 20 goal mark which is still very good for a midfielder.

And Messi missed one the other day. Straight into the keeper's arms.

Yes, i know. Fact is, he is afforded the opportunity to increase his goal tally by taking all the penalties and free kicks.

For me, it is open play goals that really count, but as you pointed out - you have to convert all those penatlies and free kicks anyway.

Penalties shouldn't count IMO. My Grandma could score from a penalty.
