Its not a special skill!If the penalty taker is bad and the keeper is good then its a 50/50 chance.

Anyone here ever taken a penalty in a league game?
Watch leagues around the world,including PSL,when its a penalty the ball goes in 90% of the time,its saved 5% of the time or misses the other 5%.
 
If your team get a penalty no matter who takes it, you can already rack up the goal on the score sheet and move on.

I kept seeing people saying that Messi was the better dribbler, thus the better player. I haven't really seen enough of Messi to really have an opinion (although I must admit, in close spaces he seems to be better than anyone I've ever seen), but I found it hard to believe that anyone can be better than Ronaldo at this point.

And as we all know (after hearing it over and over again before Ronaldo started to really deliver) end-product is the most important thing for attacking players, so I decided to look up the stats for these two players over the past two seasons (previous and current) and compare them.

Note on the average: In this informal comparison of "end-product", goals and assists are given equal weight. Average is therefore goals and assists combined divided on number of games. I am also for no specific reason counting the games they came on as subs as half a game, since it would be slightly unfair to count them as full.

Lionel Messi

2006/2007:

Apps: 30 (+4)
Goals: 17
Assists: 2
End-product per game: 0.59

2007/2008:

Apps: 27 (+5)
Goals: 15
Assists: 9
End-product per game: 0.81

Messi's average end-product per game the past two seasons: 0.70

Cristiano Ronaldo

2006/2007:

Apps: 49 (+4)
Goals: 23
Assists: 20
End-product per game: 0.84

2007/2008:

Apps: 40 (+2)
Goals: 38
Assists: 7
End-product per game: 1.10

Ronaldo's average end-product per game the past two seasons: 0.97

My thoughts
As we can see, Messi has vastly improved his contribution to the team this season, but the same can be said for Ronaldo. Scoring or creating over a goal per game for his team at this level is simply amazing, and it just goes to show how magnificent he's been this season.

I already mentioned that I haven't seen Messi enough to actually make a fair assessment of him, but this does back up my general impression of him: His dribbling is magnificent, but his overall contribution to the team is nowhere near that of Ronaldo.

Of course, some commentator once said that statistics are just like miniskirts, they give you a good idea, but they hide the most important thing. Wednesday and next Tuesday will certainly be an exciting showdown between two of football's most exciting players these days, but unfortunately for both I foresee our Wayne Rooney flabbergasting everyone and showing us why he deserves to be mentioned in this discussion as well

That was a very old post when Ronaldo was having a blinder of a season last year.

This debate never gets old hey.

Messi is currently and has been for some time the best footballer on the planet.
