Oh come on! don;t pull that whole "it's a pressure thing" on us now. These lads are trained from an early age to focus on the game and not the crowds. How can they do all sorts of tricks week in week out with 60k+ watching them and then using that excuse for missing a penalty. Utter rubbish.
 
I reckon he would have gotten it had he not slipped. He, at least, has the balls to attempt it again if he needs to because that is who he is. He will not let it get him down. Like Baggio. It's the mark of a great player - even if you fall, you will always, but always, get up and go at it again. Very literally in this case actually :D
 
Terry is pretty solid from the spot. He is an all-round solid player.

I agree, if he didnt slip, he would have scored.

Penalties shouldn't really count but at the end of the day they do. I know Gerrard has scored alot of his 20 goals from the spot this season which imo makes his achievement less amazing. The chances of a player missing a penalty is very slim. Unless he's playig for England :D Then the chances of him scoring is very slim lol
 
It doesn't matter how many games you played, when you are standing on the spot, there is immense pressure on you. The 60 000 people in the crowd are expecting nothing less than for you to score. This excludes the millions watching it live on TV. There is incredible pressure to score from the spot. That aside, it would be nice to know how many they score from the spot and open play.
 
Also it's not like the crowd is just sitting there silently. They're also screaming, cheering, heckling and so on which adds to the pressure.
 
You sure about that? I'm not. It still involves putting the ball pass the keeper. When you take a penalty, the keeper has time to prepare to make the save.
 
Anyone got any stats? I would hazard a guess and say that 80% or so of penalties go in. However (and this is pure speculation), only around 15-20% of open play chances go in. This alone would break an argument that scoring from the penalty spot is difficult. Given the choice - which would you take? 10 chances during the game, or 1 penalty kick?
 
I would say its closer to 90% smokey. Look penalties are easy. The only ones that are difiicult are penalty shoot outs in cup competitions. because you know if you miss you could be out. In the league its not even a big deal if a player misses a penalty.

Also guys - you have to remember, that just because a penalty doesn't go in - it doesn't mean the goal is lost... rebounds anyone?
