Higher electricity prices?

If goverment does not give them that 300 plus billion, just how do people expect Eskom to finance the build project? Especially if the cost of debt these days is so high?

Personally, I would rather pay more right now, than have a parastatal that is over indebted in the future.

You're joking right?

Eskom has been giving m*&rse bonuses the last few years... Rather than building new stations... Now they complain they dont have enough money to build the stations? To be honest anyone over the age of 15 knows that you should save for a rainy day and plan for the future?

Seriously this is retarded... So now we should use more again? We cant do anything right...

As jy dink jy doen goed, moet jy weet jy jaag k@k aan.

what sort of business plan offers this type of bulldust to its customers?

I'm going to use more electricity, stuff them all

This is just a symptom of a parastatal monopoly - economics101 does not apply to them. This is proof that previous price increases had nothing to do with coal supply issues and old equipment, but was orchestrated, and is also a reason for the privatisation of this sector...

All this drivel, just say it eskom, we want to privatize.
Parliment may not be awake enough, but after the billions raked in from the teklom privatization fiasco, never mind the side deals on the neotel bell, upper eskom chairs are drooling uncontrollably for privatization.

Eskom plans to spend R385bn over the next five years, most of which will go towards generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure.
Erm, what do you mean by "most of it"? Are you earmarking "some" of it for yer own pockets again?

Hell! I am dumbfounded, confounded & and just plain flummoxed. The government allowed in Neotel as an opposition to Telkom. How about getting in some efficient overseas utility company as competition to Eskom? (While we're at it might as well get competition for SAA, SAPO, SAPS, Traffic Dept, Roads Agency, SABC, MNET, SAR, etc)
ps Forgot about the License Dept (one with most nonsense)

Are you insane? You're falling for the Eskom privatization trap.
No no no no no no!

The only way that a private company will buy into the idea of building electricity in this country is if they are promised that Eskom will not compete directly with them so that they can get a decent "return on investment".

This is not what we want.

Eskom must provide cost effective electricity to the country, and be run as such.

No BEE policy bonuses.

Bonuses based on efficiency, penalties on inefficiency.

It's not rocket science dammit.

Mmmmmmmm. WOW. Maybe somewhere in guvament there is a group of people that think us normal public citizens are stupid and might not REMEMBER what was said only a few months ago, like drop your usage by 10% or the price will have to go up drastically. Much like the petrol price, increase it by 70 cents and then celebrate when they drop it by 25 cents and convince us we are back at the same old price.

I don't know how the people do it at Eskom but they really have surprised me again. They just need to say that want to increase rates based on inflation and that would be sufficient. Now they go use a reason to increase rates that contradicted a reason they used 6 months ago. What a bunch of tarts.

Yeh -they tell us stop using electricity - wait a couple of months - then decide because we're not using electricity - they can charge us more. IDIOTS!

Give us full transparency throughout eskom and you can have your increase.

Everything must be fully documented online and fully indexed and searchable.

You think, they're reading everyone's comments and showing their strength........
they jes cut our power now for 10 min ----
7.30pm - 7.40pm Glen Austin, Halfway House

This just came to me, its the industries not using "enough" electricity not us consumers, and again we get the price rise not the industries? wtf?

when the industries use over 70% of electricity and they cry "too much" we get the hike, now when they use less and cry "too little" we get the rise.

I say we demand to pay the rates at which industries are paying for electricity, then they can have their 30% hike if they want since its only 16c per kw to start off with, when we're already paying well into 40c

Pls reduce power consumtion by 10%,Eskom does not have enough power to supply you...those who fail to reduce their power consumption will be faced with hefty fines...Oh no if you use less electricity Eskom gets less money and you are going to pay more because you use less electrity...and there is nothing you can do about this...you either pay more or get a fine...
You have to read again to undestand this...and sorry if you feel dizzy after reading...
+1

And while we are feeling dizzy these people still get paid for their creative thinking.

who ever bought this 'use less electricity' business? Doesn't a powerstation only suffer in peak times, not in the afternoons(when industrial plants are offline)..

Eskom is a monopoly, what they say is that the only way a monopoly is able to make good profits is by under supplying.

That is obviously what they have been doing, and them and the anc(Telkom) are laughing all the way to the bank.

The didn't have lack of foresight, they had plenty of foresight and it all indicated $$$ to them. The ANC only aims to succeed in its short term goals. Get rich or die trying :D

SA's lame-A$$ excuse for an Enron. I wouldn't be suprised if all the power "shedding" last year was their ploy to push prices up in the same way Enron did.

the language i would use is not allowed on this forum. we use less they charge us more?!

Its a win-win situation for Eskom.

If we start using more, they're going to charge us more so they can keep use down... if we use less, they're going to charge us more so they can make money...
