Higher electricity prices?

Its a win-win situation for Eskom.

If we start using more, they're going to charge us more so they can keep use down... if we use less, they're going to charge us more so they can make money...

Thats what it's all about. They wanted their increase in prices and over the past year every other month is an excuse to increase the cost of electricity. I think they could have handled this better by saying something like "we are going to increase the rates so that finance for the new green power generators can go smoothly and ultimately lead to cheaper and cleaner power sources"...

OK! FOLKS - Here's the plan.
You (and all your friends) can now write to Eskom's CEO voicing your strongest dis-agreements.
Escom's CEO's email address is : [email protected]

LOL, i know where everyones coming from and Eskom should have known how a statement like that would be taken as (ie regarding whole 10% reduction push last year) and i agree it sounds rediculous but ill try explain what they mean...

Eskom had a problem last year to keep up with maximum demand - the total sum of power required at any one point in time by the country.... there just wasnt enough generating capacity. So result was overloading of the system and crappy old equipment started failing, hence drive to lower demand by 10%

what they saying now is that all the electricity they bill you for ie your kilo watt hours used over say the whole month has reduced (an obvious side effect to calling for a reduction in maximum demand). so ya idiots either way you look at it i guess.

Eskom's consumer pricing strategy: use more pay more; use less pay even more.
Eskomnomics - screw them for all they have, where else can they go.

Eskoms in the poo whether we like it or not. We can complain all we want but somethings gotta be done to sort out this mess. We can at least be thankful that government is taking some of the load. Id rather pay more and be sure this country at least has a decent power infrustructure for the future.

They caused it, and WE have to pay???

**** me! now I have heard it all.

"Peepols... pleez only use 96.7895643% otherwize we will need to put prizeeess up"

I voting for the soccer party this year... Bush needs to join the ANC, because they are right on par with each other!

Committee chairperson Fatima Chohan noted that government had for months been calling on consumers to save electricity.

"It's a double-edged sword," she said.

It's high time several overpaid morons threw themselves on their double-edged swords.

How many eskom employees does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

only one, however he can only screw it up

If goverment does not give them that 300 plus billion, just how do people expect Eskom to finance the build project? Especially if the cost of debt these days is so high?

Personally, I would rather pay more right now, than have a parastatal that is over indebted in the future.

Personallyh I'd rather not have Eskom as a parastatal....

I doubt we have much of a choice. IIRC, SA has one the worlds lowest electricity rates, even with some of the recent increases, making it very hard for an independent producer to come in and set up shop, AND see a return in a reasonable time.

so it didnt occur to them that they can only bill on usage. so reduced consumption = reduced billing. what's new there?

I agree with this in principle but somethings also needs to be done before we will pay up, firstly, they need to fire all the current eskom executives, and run eskom like a department of government, I believe the eskom CEO is currently earning more then our president, this is completely ridiculous and don't anyone tell me that the job is demanding, I'd tell you that being a president must be so much more demanding, and pricing transparency must be inforced completely, again, there shall be no trade secrets, what secrets? they using our money, we demand to know.

WAY WAY too much to go through here ... but from what I have read, there's really not a lot of real thought put into actually figuring out why there is this whole big problem.

Firstly, the build program started late and Eskom DID say that this was a mistake and hence, are trying to rectify it ... what good is it keeping on beating about on this point?

Secondly, read the article again - Eskom expected a certain amount of electricity to be sold. The load-shedding and drop in consumption due to all the CFL drives etc. was taken into account but because the economy worldwide is dead (last I read, the Anglo group is cutting their workforce by 40 000 ... that does give us problems hey?), the sales have dropped and there is not enough money to finance these build projects.

Thirdly, has ANYONE here been at any of the current Eskom build sites? The construction is on a scale that none of you can imagine. The amount of money being spent here is way more than probably more than the total amount spent by the company of every member on this forum.

I hate the fact that we will have to pay more for electricity. It does suck when ANYTHING goes up. But to live in this world - we have to do it. These blackouts are not a local thing - the USA and Australia are also experiencing it. Also, with inflation taken into account, we actually are still paying "less" than we were at the beginning of the 80s.

Think about this as well - I pay a maximum of R150 for electricity every month ... a 30% increase means I will pay R195 ... R45 more ... which is the price of one of those combo's at Nandos. What that means is that for ONE extra day per month, you rather make your own lunch rather than go buy at Nando's .. is that REALLY that big a sacrifice?

Ok - and I pay over R1,000 electricity every month - so +30%, that means I pay R1,300 a month - much more than a Nando's burger - but I guess this is somehow going to be my fault.
