WAY WAY too much to go through here ... but from what I have read, there's really not a lot of real thought put into actually figuring out why there is this whole big problem.
Firstly, the build program started late and Eskom DID say that this was a mistake and hence, are trying to rectify it ... what good is it keeping on beating about on this point?
Secondly, read the article again - Eskom expected a certain amount of electricity to be sold. The load-shedding and drop in consumption due to all the CFL drives etc. was taken into account but because the economy worldwide is dead (last I read, the Anglo group is cutting their workforce by 40 000 ... that does give us problems hey?), the sales have dropped and there is not enough money to finance these build projects.
Thirdly, has ANYONE here been at any of the current Eskom build sites? The construction is on a scale that none of you can imagine. The amount of money being spent here is way more than probably more than the total amount spent by the company of every member on this forum.
I hate the fact that we will have to pay more for electricity. It does suck when ANYTHING goes up. But to live in this world - we have to do it. These blackouts are not a local thing - the USA and Australia are also experiencing it. Also, with inflation taken into account, we actually are still paying "less" than we were at the beginning of the 80s.
Think about this as well - I pay a maximum of R150 for electricity every month ... a 30% increase means I will pay R195 ... R45 more ... which is the price of one of those combo's at Nandos. What that means is that for ONE extra day per month, you rather make your own lunch rather than go buy at Nando's .. is that REALLY that big a sacrifice?
