HIV NEGATIVE !!!!!

There are a few things that occured to me when reading this thread and by the time I got to the end I have forgotten a few but:

1. Would the OP have been as forthcoming with his announcement if he had been positive? I fear not and this to me just further alienates people who are positive. The exuberance of his announcement would only lead to others who are positive to be less likely to announce their status. They are still human...

2. There seem to be a lot of assumptions that "my significant other would never stray". Ask anyone who has been on the other side of a spouse cheating and they may say they had an inkling but no one ever knows for sure. Don't make assumptions.

3. Giving blood as a means of getting a free HIV test is not very sensible considering the SANBS do not tell the donor the results of any tests done but merely destroy the blood...

4. A lot of talk centres around wearing a condom when having sex and all will be well.... yes, penetrative sex is one of the riskier acts but many of the acts preceding penetrative sex are also risky and usually done condom less.... a bit of a false sense of safety I fear...

Brilliant post.

This and the 'so I went to a pro' thread showed me how little people (including me) know about HIV and STD's in general. I've been quite shocked by several of comments.

We are 3 sons. Myself (oldest) the middle one and the youngest (Electrician).

The middle one is gay. We have no idea how he got it, and he's not very open about it. But about 2 weeks ago my dad took him to the doctor cos he got very thin and had diarea for about 2 weeks. The tests was done and he's HIV+. As pervious forum members said he must have had sex but he says he never did. Really sad tbh :(

did he give blood, had a blood transfusion?

HIV is alive and kicking in SA

Are you implying you can get HIV by giving blood? Because that is 100% not true.

Getting it from infected transfusion the chances are about the lowest of all forms of transmission.

It's hard to hear but bottom line is the chap is in the highest risk group in terms of HIV infection - gay, 20 something males - he might say he's not sexually active but usually, in my experience, the most obvious truth is the truth.

Just go, other wise it will eat away inside of you.
I got tested, negative baby!. was standing at the petrol station when the doctor called me and told me the good news. I jumped up and down and went mad. Its a great feeling.

ja, I also had a test a while ago after my tranny mix up event in Spain. I always go about every six months or twice a year. Its best if you sleep around a lot with ho's etc

Do Dischem etc do it? Or do I need to go to my GP?

Both can do it but GP is supposed to be a more accurate test. If you go to Dischem and test +ve they'll tell you to get re-tested at your GP to be sure. So by the same rationale how can they be sure about a -ve test?

Because the test is biased towards false positives, rather than false negatives. Think of it as being oversensitive.

Cool. I'll pop in today to a GP. So I actually go into his rooms and ask?

Do they take alot of blood? Or a ... um ... prick?

I think if you go to a GP, you have to pay for the consultation - rather go to a Dischem or other clinic.

But they said it's not as accurate?

And the amount of blood? I hate blood and stuff :/

If you have medical aid, pop in. Once in the consultation room tell him you want a test. He asks you a few questions, counciling kinda stuff. Then whips out a needle I think They use to dart Elephants with, take amout 40 ml of blood, have you sign a form and tell you he will phone you to come in once he gets the results. 2 - 3 days wait. DON'T DO IT OVER A WEEKEND ! :D

I got tested yesterday and got my results that same night by Lancet labs, i am hiv negative and i was extremely happy. And I have decided not to sleep aound anymore, i feel as if God gave me another chance and i'm not gonna blow it by being risky.

Yep. Got tested recently and failed with flying colours so I'm good too.

It's odd that even though I know we are both boring and couldn't have picked it up anywhere I was still nervous about the results.

Wow - been away for a while and now I see this. Man, I feel for you - but I'm happy you've been tested and know for sure. I know the feeling of waiting for the results.
