The driver should be in the fan itself - so you don't need to go in the roof.
Completely understand your aversion - HATE going in the roof

Oh no wasn't referring to that, rather just making it all fit.

Don't mind the roof so much in the other sections.

what element does your geyser have? I have heard stories of those sonoffs not being ideal for a geyser

on a related note: https://powerforum.co.za/topic/3985-2kw-geyser-on-16a-sonoff/

but yes that does puzzle me too what you are saying...dodgy wiring or isolater or something?

Okay so here’s a thought.

I never Wired the Earth into the Sonoff as it was already just bridged and hard to get to.

So the question of logic I have now is what is the expected behaviour?

If I run the earth through the Sonoff and there is a problem does it trip the Earth breaker?

If I don’t run the Earth through the Sonoff does it trip the dedicated breaker?

Or do they really have nothing to do with each other?

Boom, Thor's sonoff express has arrived, will PM everyone.

I want to bring in another batch, but I want to do that properly with an importing code from SARS, @ScottulusMaximus do you perhaps know what is the process and cost to register as an importer?

I could not for the life of me find any working link on the SARS website.

You are entitled to two shipments of R1500 each a year.

Only bother with the importers code if you’ve run out of those and extra ID numbers.

I am no electrician but it I think it depends on what the problem is, i.e an earth leakage should trip when it detects a short where a breaker will trip on overload. I doubt not connecting the earth would cause your circuit breaker to trip but again i am no expert, it is just a bit unsafe of course.

edit: though a short with no earth could cause the amps pulled to trip the breaker maybe?

The EL protects the people and the circuit breaker protects the wiring in your house, so the EL will trip when some of the electricity is flowing but not through the normal circuit (ie. positive to neutral) and the circuit breaker will only trip if the particular circuit is drawing more amperage than the breaker is designed to trip at.

Whether to earth the sonoff or not would depend on what is connected to it I would think, although a earth is unlikely to cause any unwanted behaviour and would be safer.

Edit. The circuit breaker will indeed trip without the earth if it drawing too high an amperage.(To answer the question.)

No joy.

Other Pow R2 went in, this time with Tasmota and the earth connected and alles.

Still tripped the DB somewhere last night as it was dead this morning.

Interesting but for me is that my kettle uses more power than my geyser!!

Quite possible that instantaneous power usage the Kettle will be higher. However, you don't keep on boiling your kettle every couple of minutes to keep the water warm, do you?

My geyser is 2.5kW, my kettle probably 3.0 - 3.5 kW.

I have an appkettle which has a built in power monitor.

Here are some of my stats Screenshot_20190908-143458_Appkettle.jpg

Not perhaps a neutral finding an earth perhaps when something switches? That will also trip the EL as the geyser for obvious reasons is usually earthed pretty well.

What is a larnie
This is a South African slang word, which probably originated somewhere in the South of Johannesburg, that describes something which is expensive, fancy and yuppy.

It can also be used to describe a very rich person living in the more affluent parts of Johannesburg, especially the Northern parts of the city.

Peter: Hey Sipho, where do you work?
Sipho: In the north of Joburg
Peter: Gee with all the larnies, huh?

OR

John: Damn, look at that Rolls-Royce Phantom, what a car!
Piet: Yeah, very larney indeed!
