Hi Guys,

Has anyone any idea where one can buy home automation products, one in particular I'm looking for is an automatic blind opener and closer, mainly so that i press a button and it open/closes so that I don't manually have to do it.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Many Thanks!

Most blind suppliers offer blinds with electric motors/remotes for opening/closing.

They also offer units that open/close when the sun rises/sets etc.

And most of them cost an absolute fortune...

I investigated this stuff when I started my study renovation and very quickly abandoned it due to the cost.

Haven't investigated it myself, but I've got a hard time believe cost is a factor in this case. True home automation is flippin expensive sure, but basic curtain opening & closing is something that sounds within reach. Hell we had to solder 8 bit binary multiplication circuits for high school so I can't imagine "move motor until you hit the contact" can be all that expensive.

Yea agreed. I have a friend in La Lucia who installed home automation. All i can tell you is it worked after R1.5 million

But it controls anything you can think of not just blinds im sure just blinds would set you back about 10k per room maybe more.

Well it depend on expectations. Jannie custom built his place with automation in mind ( billion ducts in the concrete ) and then spent a pile of cash on top of that. Compare that with OP's opening curtains idea and its clear that we're looking at a very wide range of options here...

Without a doubt, but to automate blinds, and do it properly (motors inside the blind roller casing etc) is not a cheap exercise, Last time I checked it was around R5k for a relatively simple automated blind, going up to R10k for the fancier ones

I was looking for something with POE to power the blinds but the systems I found needed a power point for each blind which is too much of a hassel for me

I doubt POE would provide enough power for the blinds would it?
