Importing Advice.

To the guys who have bought their projectors overseas, can you advice me on the best route top take to bring one myself, I'm interested in an Epson projector primarily because of their zoom.

Things like retailer, shipping services and the like.

I bought mine brand new from a shop on eBay. I can PM you the details if you like. He used USPS, which is cheaper than DHL and the like, but requires a bit of admin on your side to call Track & Trace to get the local tracking number. Shipping was $200. Customs will slap you about R1400 on a $1200 purchase.

Hi all,

My plans for my new house is being finalised at the moment and was wondering if anybody would quickly look at the design for my dedicated home theatre. The size of my room is 5.9m(l) x 4m(w) x 2.5m(h). From everything that I've read this should be a good size since there are no multiples of other dimensions, etc.

I'm not planning on adding additional insulation to the room, since the house will either be built using a light steel frame or EPS, both with much higher insulation properties than brick. I will get professionals in towards the end of the project to assess and install any required acoustic panels to improve the sound inside the room.

At the front of the room a custom cabinet which will house a 40" Huyndai LCD that I currently have with a Grandview motorised screen (suggestions for size?) over it (for either Optoma HD20 or HD67 (roof mounted) and from what I've read in this thread, the Epson EH-TW3600 should be considered as well, any others I should consider?). The reason why I might go for the HD67 is the fact that Optoma is bringing out their 3D component early next year.

The L-C-R speakers will also be housed in this cabinet in enclosures with adjustable shelves, covered with acoustic cloth. This will allow me to upgrade my speakers more easily in future if/when the opportunity arises.

At the back I'll have shelves and a computer cabinet with drawers for all components in the centre. The surround speakers will also be in here, with adjustable shelves and acoustic cloth as with front speakers. Against the side walls I'll also have cabinets for the 7.1 speakers (Must still get these) again with adjustable shelves and acoustic cloth.

Currently I have 2 different Wharfedale sets that I want to use for front (Diamond 10.6) and back (Crystal 2-10) speakers, and I think they'll be ok for now.

I have a Sansui 7.1 receiver which I'm looking to replace in the near future with the Onkyo TX-SR608 or similar (any recommendations)

I don't have subs at the moment (apart from those that you get with the mini all-in-one 5.1 packages) but want to install 2 of them (any suggestions?). I though front left and right would've been fine, but on THX they recommend putting it on opposing walls. Should I be doing this, and where?

my system is low spec

sony dn1000 amp with 5.1 sony speakers and a sony 42" full hd tv.

but, the rear speakers seem really soft.

i can go into the settings for the amp and can adjust the "db" of each speaker.

must i put the "db" to the max on the rear speakers?

Hi Glaurens, I foresee a lot of Googling in your near future, it might be worth copying your post into avforums.com, htguide.com or avforums.co.za so guys can give you local prices on stuff like acoustic material. With regards to your screen what's the diagonal length of the screen? In a similar dimension room like yours i went for 120" size projecting on a matt white wall, maybe post a few pics of the room in its current state and chaps on here can give you an idea on placement.

Edit : Also worth checking out is the Vivitek range of projectors, i recently demoed this : http://www.projectorcentral.com/vivitek_h1080fd_projector_review.htm and sitting next to the higher priced Optoma HD81 is fared brilliantly.

Are your floorstanders angled correctly? They look like you should be sitting on the glass table.
 
Yup.. I tend to agree with xrapidx on this one.. I think those floor standings are angled a bit TOO much..

other than that, it looks awesome...
 
Thanks guys, you picked up on something iv been trying to get right for while but simply cant, since this is a living area i have compomises to make with the SO and cant move much stuff around. Now the problem i have is that the speakers sit just behind the sofa and messes up the sound. It wasnt a problem with my B&W 685's as they were on stands but with these... :(

I am very happy with my Epson. If you have a bit more cash to burn then also look at the Panasonic PT-AE4000U.

I'm not phased by all the 3D hype. I would give the technology a few more years to evolve and prices to come down.
 
Maybe not but if i were in glaurens shoes, purchasing my first PJ, i too would be asking the same question.
 
so i seems to be down to either the Epson or the HD67, which in turn will give me enough money for the Onkyo SR608.

I think it's going to be the Epson, but since it's going to be at least 3 months before I need to buy it, things might change again.

I've previously posted the same thread at avforums.com but had absolutely no replies. I have been googling and reading a lot on designs of an HT, and basically tried to put all good ideas into it.
