Homemade Pizza

We've got a great area bakery that makes bases fresh daily and one of these little beauties.

Not much to look at but makes great pizzas. :)

Also got one of them but mine has a permanent smell which will not come out - so it tends to make the food taste/smell as such too. I need a new one.

Biltong or braai left-overs on DIY pizzas also rules.

Braai-left-overs maybe but I cant stand biltong on a pizza. It shouldnt be cooked!

we buy that bread from shoprite that looks like a pizza it already has some toppings on it, then you just add your own toppings when you get home and there you have a pizza, taste fantastic. a week ago we bought a pizza from pnp from the bakery side and it was warm still and had that.

Cheese on bread does not count as a pizza.

In other news .... /me is having pizza tonight, lol. Bacon, feta, caramelized onion, lots of softened, peeled peppers, cheddar and some cabbanossi (spelling) sausage :D

You're in for a  surprise with the cabanossi. These fatty sausages like cabanossi and salami shouldnt be used on a pizza - nor should they be cooked in the 1st place. The fat cooks out into everything else and tastes awful! Once bitten twice shy for me - never again...

Hi everyone,

A recent thought hit me - why is it that I have not made my own pizza at my flat? I have got a decent oven to do so! :D

I would love to make my own pizza with my oven... does it come out to cheaper than buying pizza from your shops like Debonairs or Romans? Will I need to get flour and manually make the pizza base on my own or will I be fine with premade base? I would love to make a pizza with a lot of bacon :D

How do you guys go about making your own pizza's... can you give me tips on how to make pizza at home?

Thanks.

1. Get yourself some pre made bases at woolies, boytch! You can go get yourself pre made dough if you feel like the extra effort - for the experience.

2. Schmear some tomato paste or something lekker on the base if not done so already or if not enough.

3. Throw some of your favourite food stuffs on there. You can't go wrong with tomatoes (remove the juice bru, you don't a soggy pizza now do you?), bacon and some of them peppers. Chilli smaaks lekker too, so does pieces of boerie. Add some salt especially on those tomatoes.

4. Top it off with a lot of cheese. You can like even mix the cheeses bru. Be creative.

5. Don't forget to bliksem some pepper and stuff on that pizza.

6. Now pop that baby in the oven at 180 for abouts 8-10 minutes if base was already baked.

7. Get yourself a beer or pour yourself some wine and enjoy that Italian flatbread bro!

I think its less effort to make the base and sauce than going to the shop to buy some and it tastes better. There are many recipes online and will depend on what kind of base you like.

Making pizza at home can be pretty pricey if you end up putting on lots of expensive toppings but if you can keep to 1or2 meats and 2or3 other toppings its not too bad.

I make my own dough & sauce. Keep on saying I'll post the recipe but never get around to it.

Thing is your home oven simply does not get hot enough (you need ~400C) so the trick is to prebake your base, let it cool before adding anything to it.

I have used a few home ovens and even a braai before but I used a piece of granite to bake the pizza on. Just put the oven on max and heat the pizza stone or whatever you are using before you add the pizza.

1) Make your own dough, do NOT buy them from a store. Hamster, nee wat. There is simply no comparison with the experience of tearing a chewy fresh thin slice of dough. It is not difficult, I promise. Flour, salt, yeast, warm water, sugar - bang:

2) Make your own sauce, do NOT 'smear some tomato paste' on. I have a go-to marinara that l use for any recipe that calls for it:
- Fry an onion in butter with garlic
- Add a tin of tomatoes and a cup of chicken stock and let it simmer down
- Add a small glug of balsamic vinegar, a large glug of worcestershire, chopped parsley, a sprinkle of sugar, and season
- Puree with a blender.

Easy.

That nutella marshmallow pizza looks the bomb.

usually just buy a jar of something. but yes need to try this marinara.

If you like a thin base add about 25-30% semolina to the dough that makes it nice and chewy, crunchy and its a bit stronger so less affected by soggy toppings.

Our Kenwood Bread Maker came with a incredible Pizza Dough recipe. Since then it has actually been our Kenwood Pizza Dough Maker. You just chuck in the ingredients, switch it on and a hour later its ready.

A decent sauce - I use a sachet of tomato paste with equal parts chutney, and some Black Gold Balsamic Reduction and herbs. (Once also added some leftover olive tapenade - it was awesome.)
Mozarella and at least one other cheese - do not skimp on the cheese..
The rest is ad-hoc, depending on what is in the kitchen. Rocket, mushrooms, peppadews, feta, bacon, you name it. I add the mozzarella at the bottom, and then the toppings, followed by the other cheese on top.

The oven is critical. Like Ponder said - in a normal oven - prebake your base first, then add the incredients.
A decent pizza pan - with holes in the bottom is really handy.

Myself - we were gifted a Anvil commercial grade convection oven after a good friend passed away. 10 minutes in that and the pizza is better than any you'd ever get in a restaurant.
