HomePod mini

I saw a few of these for cheap on Marketplace (not scam Schit). Was thinking of getting one but decided against it.
I also consider it every time I see a cheap one, and then decide against it. Still need to decide if it will be a helpful tool or just a novelty for my use case.

The big problem for me is Marketplace. Not because of scams (sure, they are there and one needs to be careful), but lately the sellers just don’t respond to you anymore.

Don’t know if it’s a matter of, they sell the item and don’t bother to update the ad, but I responded to a lot of ads lately, can even see in Messenger that the messages were received and read, but no replies.

My old Minis were possibly the most trash sounding speakers I've ever owned. I don't regret selling them for next to nothing. If you really want Apple speakers, I highly recommend the full size HomePods rather.

Mine sounds much much better than the Google Home Mini's it replaced.

Edit: to be fair the Google Home Minis were the 2016 OG ones and cheaper.

You probably got duds or a software update improved them. Even this recent Thurrott review says they sound incredible.
Given their small size, the sound quality is pretty incredible. (This is true of some Amazon Echo Dot speakers I recently purchased as well.) They should work well in our small Mexico City apartment.

I cannot vouch for them personally, but was pleasantly surprised at how loud one is — this being in a braai environment, with noisy kids etc. etc.

A friend has a single, and it does what one would hope for, in terms of background music.
Could imagine a pair doing nicely — but would agree that unlikely to match the sound quality/profile/stage of physically bigger speakers.
Compared to a similar sized speaker, from what I have read/seen/heard, think the HP mini easily takes the win, but again, that's a low bar.
If I were to see some at a discounted price, would probably grab a pair for my kids' rooms.

I sometimes find them not to be loud enough, but they're ok for background music from a loudness point of view. Would have been nice if they had a bit more oomph to crank them up a little bit more though. Even a JBL flip 4 can do louder.

So with Apple Intelligence taking over soon I wonder if there is going to be some weird disparity with Siri on iPhone vs HomePods since they don't have all the tech inside.

Or will they simply offload it to the internet for the HomePods?

For playing music I don't see the use case, I’m sure they sound very impressive for their size but as full range Hifi speakers they won't even come close to cutting it. I've also seen them every now and then for R1000 on FB, I’m tempted but they'll probably just be another gimmick in terms what I’d want to use them for, which is for music or TV speakers.

Out of interest sake when you use them to watch Tv or videos is there any noticeable lag?

It's definitely the kind of thing you have in places where you wouldn't normally have HiFi speakers.

Mine is on my desk where I work, next to my bed and in the kitchen.

When I really want to get serious then I have my Games Room and proper audio.

Note I'm referring to the Minis...the big boys are a bit of a different story and I don't have personal experience there.

Sure but without an in-house search engine it'll always have to offload bigger questions to now = google or future = chatgpt.

For me I just want to be able to say stuff like "Turn the geyser on for an hour" or better still "Turn the geyser on at 20:00"

****

Wait, holy **** I can already do this now in iOS18 just tried it and all of them worked including "Turn the geyser off when I leave".
