Please can somebody assist me here.

I would like to setup a domain to have my own email domain. So [email protected]

If I host through afrihost at R97 a year and then piggy back the email system off gmail would it cost me anything more? I phoned afrihost but i'm a bit more confused. Will there be a set limit still and thereafter per megabyte cost for email traffic? Or does it simply go through gmail as per a normal gmail account and only cost R97 per annum.

Thanks

Depends on who hosts the DNS for you.

Originally you still had to do your own DNS hosting, but it seems (I am not 100% sure, so seems) nowadays Google will also do that for you, so basically you just need to get the domain registered and pay for that on a yearly basis. If you do it yourself directly via co.za then will probably be even cheaper than R97 per year.

Alternatively if Google doesn't do the DNS hosting for you, there are free providers out there, like Zoneedit give you a few zones for free, or freedns.afraid.org which give you limited features for free, but they give you what you need for a simple www. and MX records.

If Afrihost hosts the DNS for you, it will definitely cost you more than R97/year.

No it won't cost you anything extra - once Afrihost has setup your domain's DNS correctly for Google Apps, your emails (sending and receiving) will have nothing to do with Afrihost and will be routed through and stored by Google.

Some hosts are a little snarfy about letting you register a domain with no hosting package and just DNS management. In fact an experience with Hetzner turned me off their services a while back where they would not let me point a registered domain elsewhere.

I use my US multi-domain hosting package $4/month for DNS for .co.za domains, and then use cPanel to add relevant CNAME records, but one could equally use a free DNS service.

I've done a lot of these setups

My Standard combo is:
Gridhost with one of the cheap hosting packages, gives direct control of DNS incl. MX records and easy registration of a domain
Google Apps Free edition for the mail hosting

The email traffic doesn't count against your website traffic as it's never routed through the host servers

Takes about 30mins to get everything paid, updated and configured,no sweat

Interested to find out myself as I want to switch two domains to Afrihost.

But your need to use Google Apps for your email - very easy to setup and it takes less than an hour if your a first timer with no knowledge of things work.

Hi Guys

Webhostza offers free DNS hosting.

http://www.webhostza.com/clients/cart.php?a=add&pid=4

Just sign up and you have access to cPanel where you can do the DNS changes.

Hope it helps.

I agree.

@OP
I just went through the whole process. I did it all myself (with a bit of help from mybb members) and I can say it's a great experience and learned a lot about DNS and the behind the scenes side of hosting. I also use webhostza and Google Apps provide step-by-step guides to help you set it up (sign in go to Manage Domain).
