I got a call from Telkom yesterday saying I can now upgrade to 40mbps from my 20mbps package.

ADSL checker says 20mpbs is the most in my area right now and according to the router (ADSL2+ only) I'm connecting at 18mbpd of a max 23mbps at 9db noice.

Questions :

Is ADSLChecker accurate at 20mbps or Telkom, who phoned, correct at 40mbps?
Shouldn't my max on my router indicate 40mbps, or would this be because ADSL and not VDSL ie VDSL modem would show 40mbps.
Surely the noise is going to be an issue? Can't believe it increases with different ?
Lastly, what is VDSL 40mbps upload?

ADSL checker is as accurate as the person updating the system is, which is not much. I've been on 10megs for 3 months now. Been on 4megs before. If I input my landline, it says "No Service". If I input my address (As if I don't have a landline), then it says 40meg available, but no service available.

ADSL Checker says i can get 40Mb but I can only get 4Mb.

Thanks guys. Ad the other questions?

Why isn't my modem showing a max of 40mbps?
Noise level too low?

Once you get switched to VDSL your stats will increase dramatically.... Why are you not running full 20Mbps on VDSL instead of adsl2+?

You will actually get full 20Mbps and have 2Mbps upload instead of 1Mbps. Once you on VDSL you can the estimate what you could possibly get in terms of 40Mbps.

I don't have a VDSL router.

You should do so, the 23Mbps that your router displays is due to the max of ADSL2+, you could probably go higher.
VDSL also has slightly lower pings/higher stability.

Ok cool ; I'll start checking for VDSL modems.

As I should use my 9db noise as a guide if not on the correct profile?

Edit : The Asus N17U seems decent at R1,500

That SNR is not bad for ADSL2+ but remember that adsl2+ has max sync speed of 23Mbps so even if you are really close to the ISAM your SNR will still be low because you are close to max what ADSL2+ offers.

Once you get pushed to VDSL you will see a slight increase in Attenuation but suddenly your SNR is brilliant. VDSL is much better in my option. Once you are on VDSL then you can estimate max speeds. Now you just can't guess based on adsl2+ stats what VDSL will be like.

Just for interest sake what is your attenuation currently?

Hi. I'll check when I get home.

But I'll think I'll get a VDSL router :)

You will be much happier with VDSL, I had 20Mbps ADSL2+, because I didn't have a VDSL modem, as soon as I changed to VDSL my SNR went up from 6 to 30, the ADSL was good but the VDSL is great.

Everything I do just feels a bit snappier and the double upload and about 2Mbps extra download you get doesn't hurt.

Sorry for the late reply

Downstream Upstream / Downstream
Current Rate(Kbps) 18431 1022
Max Rate(Kbps) 23636 1161
Noise Margin(dB) 8.9 9.7
Attenuation(dB) 23.5 12
Output Power(dBm) 18 12

I went out to get the modem I want but no one has it where I can just walk in :/ Have to place an order

Yeah VDSL routers are surprisingly not that popular. Once you got one you want to pm TelkomZA and have them move you to the VDSL profile then check your stats.

Nice to take a screenshot of your stats before and then when you are on VDSL. Nice to compare.

Ok - believe it or not, I managed to find my old Pace that Telkom gave me ;)

So plugged it in, changed password and it's working.

What the easiest way to change to VDSL modulation?
Also, how do I see the stats on this thing ie SNR etc?

GUI seems too pretty with few settings (unless hidden)

EDIT : Sent a tweet to Telkom on twitter

Yeah or pm telkomza rep here to change you to vdsl

I'm actually synicing higher with this modem!
