How accurate is ADSLChecker?

I didn't know how to check stats before I left (so can't see noise or max) - but syncing at 20mbps as opposed to 18mbps on my Trendnet
 
The checker shows I can get 40mbps, but my service provider claims I can only get 10mbps, due to my signal to noise ratio, which is at 12, what noise ratio do you need for 20mbps and 40mbps?

What is your attenuation?

I was on 20Mbps ADSL2+ with a attenuation of 9dB and SNR of 6.0dB and when I switched over to VDSL my attenuation went to 16dB and my SNR to 30dB.

I'm sure if you switch to VDSL your SNR will at least double and then your ISP will magically allow you to switch to 40Mbps.

You might not get the full 40Mbps but you will get the full 20Mbps.

They claim I cannot get 20mbps, which is the speed I wanted, but my current router can only do adsl2+. Did you get decent speeds when you were on 20mbps, adsl2+?

How do I find the maximum speed my line is capable of?

I had very good speed on 20Mbps ADSL, I'm very sure you can get 20Mbps ADSL with your stats but your SNR will go down to 6.0dB which is the bare minimum.

If you then get a VDSL modem and change modulation your SNR will then go way up because you are so close to the exchange.

I changed last night from 20mbit ADSL2+ to 20mbps VDSL.

Download went from 16mbps to 19mbps and uploads from 0.8mbps to 1.7mbps

Just to add that you're also more than double the distance away from the exchange so in theory his speed and stats should be great.
 
How much greater can he get than 19mbps? ;)

That is why I didn't really complain when ASSIA kicked in, most of the guys with bad attenuation were affected with lowered speeds to stabilise their lines but the guys that were close to their exchange had their speeds increased.
 
Hi, was also looking to go to VDSL but Telkom and my ISP said that I am not close enough to the exchange. Any idea if I switch to VDSL that I might see a better speed?

Easy ask them to switch you over to the VDSL profile if you have a VDSL router. PM the Telkom rep or social media.

Your attenuation would probably go to about 23 or 24dB on VDSL but your SNR will improve a lot and you should sync @ 22.5Mbps for a 20Mbps line.

Thanks, if my line is with Web Africa will it be a problem to contact Telkom directly?

When I ask my ISP they tell me this.

"We have unfortunately been advised by Telkom that currently due to the conditions of the physical infrastructure and your distance from the exchange your line speed will not be able to be set higher than 20Mbps. They had to physically go out to establish this as all test centre conditions indicated incorrectly that the exchange can deliver 40Mbps to your premises.

We do sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused."
