How did you STOP smoking?

I have a prescription for Champix. Just getting my mind right. Will read the Carr book first.
Doc said I should in the meantime try to cut down to half just to lessen the psychological shock.

When reading the book do exactly as the book says. Dont stop smoking now, keep on smoking and start the book.

Thanks. Am a bit scared, have such an addictive personality.....
Cant see why you are scared. If you are scared of failing then you are already planning to fail so get your mindset right.

Just think how free you will be from that stupid habit thats controlling your life...

Indeed. Cutting down is the worst thing you can do. You're a nicotine addict - trying to cut down before your quit while you're also still mentally addicted to cigarettes just makes the next cigarette seem more precious, and with Allen Carr, you're going to try and remove that. The book also advises you to continue smoking while you read it - do exactly that.

I used to wake up in the wee hrs coughing up black gunk, decided to quit cold turkey. That was in 1996, still going strong. Chewing gum and staying out of pubs for about 6 months helped. Oh and my lung function improved after about 3yrs and x-rays taken after about 10yrs or so showed a normal healthy pair of lungs.

So Poffle and early... Hows the Non-Smoking going? You guys managed to keep it up?

Myself and my partner are busy reading the Allen Karr book at the moment. Definitely makes me ask questions about why i smoke but still got a long way to go until the book is finished but will see what happens once i'm done with the book. As he says, finish the book BEFORE you even attempt to stop.

I stopped cold turkey. Had pneumonia, and have bad lungs, should never have started. Smoked 16 years ago, and getting sick every 9 months made me stop. Best decision ever. Will never start again.

Cold turkey.. exactly 1 year ago today; and I avoided other smokers until the cravings had worn-off..

Also cold turkey, 1.5 years smoke free and I cant even remember smoking.

I kept thinking about how disgusting it is having smoke in my lungs considering they feed oxygen to my body.

I kept thinking that they are cutting my one and only life down in years, and that they would make older age more difficult from a health point of view. Who knows, lung cancer, emphysema, etc.

I kept thinking about their cost. And the cost of medical if they did indeed make my old age difficult.

They stink, disrupt others' clean air, most smokers are inconsiderate litterbugs, they're just not cool or clever.

3.5 years without them now, 2 years without other stuff.

Never started... it was blatantly obvious that it would be stupid to become a smoker willingly. Used this amazing thing called self control and stayed away. Was surprisingly easy.

Quite easy when you don't have friends to apply peer pressure.
Lots they smoked everyday bought me packs of Lucky Strike then later Marlboro, they smoke to this day. I even smoked a Lucky or two every now and again to try and understand what enjoyment they got from it. Couldn't rationalize it so it never bit.

I know I sound like a high and mighty doo$ now but could never understand why someone would choose self harm. Self preservation? It's like nature has been bred out of us.

Funny story, when they would smoke I would always bring a tennis ball just to hang outside with them while they smoke. We always ended up having more fun throwing and kicking the tennis ball around in the end. It was an experiment of sorts, if smoking was less amusing than a tennis ball then... well it can't be thaaat great.
