How did you STOP smoking?

Wait for your next cold or flu, that's how I quit smoking 7 years ago. My chest was so bad and sore I couldn't really smoke so I didn't force it for the first day. As I got better, the cravings got a bit worse but I chewed on pumpkin and sunflower seeds - the actual habit of raising the hand to mouth was satisfied and snapping the seeds open with my teeth seemed to help the nervous tension and ease my cravings.

I had a few failed attempts to stop smoking before this final one and cutting down on cigarettes never worked. Rather don't smoke at all for as long as you can.

So the doc prescribed Champix for me, but I'm schitting myself reading some of the side effects that people went through. Question is, are these guys mostly in the minority? Did anyone here go on it, and not experience anything hectic other than the usual nausea and vivid dreams? Thing is I don't want to black out while driving or lose my mind at work...

Champix 3.5 years ago. Vivid dreams, that was it. Not a single cigarette was smoked thereafter. :)

What was your dosage? Did you find it better to take it with food at night?

Doc said to take one a day for 5 days, then 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening thereafter. But I'm scared to take it in the morning before going to work...

True Story. Smoked for about 14 years with no plans on quitting. One night I had 3 bottles of red wine, woke up the next morning with the worst babelas of my life. Felt so bad that I couldn't get out of bed that Sunday. On Monday at work I decided well if I didn't have to smoke the day before I might as well quit.

Never smoked again...

The best way to give up smoking is with cannabis, alcohol and snacks.

Day 14 on Champix, quit yesterday. Some minor cravings but nothing major.

None of the famous side effects either, not even nausea...

Good job!

Re: nausea. I spoke to someone else who stopped using Champix, and also had nausea. Turns out it was only when he smoked. Thought about it and that's what happened to me when I took it - I just didn't realise it at the time and thought it was a side affect. It's basically meant to reprogram your brain by blocking off the nicotine receptors it's created over the years (it runs on similar pathways to eating, drinking and sex - all release dopamine) - and in my colleague's case he's associated smoking with nausea, so doesn't smoke anymore, understandably.

Hey Guys n Gals,

So since creating this post, I have (very slowly) been reading the Allen Carr book and finished it today... Tonight will be my last cig! As of tomorrow I will be able to call myself a "Non Smoker". Keeping positive and only thinking of the bright future without it!

PS: Mike, how you keeping up there brutha? Month and a half now...

The doctor refused to do my leg operation unless I stopped smoking a month before the op.

I went to the Allan Car clinic.

The first 3 days were tough. Don't miss it at all now.

Best part - it costs almost nothing if you are a Discovery member.

The only side effects I had from champix was nausea. I ended up only taking 1 pill just before turning off the light at night.

It really works.

Well done. You've already nailed the first step, which is your mindset.

Close to 4 years cold turkey for me... Nearly 2 years without smoking green.

Quit smoking mid July this year so that's 6 weeks now. I went into clicks to get my daughter some cold and flu medicine, saw the nicorettes on the shelf and just bought them as well.

Haven't had a cigarette since.
This not my first time quitting smoking so have learned some lessons from past failures. i.e. Just don't buy them.
