How did you STOP smoking?

Hey NBC,

Thanks for sharing this! Very nice to get first hand advice and you are 100% correct in what you say (well, from what i have heard from others anyway).

Hearing this and doing my best to apply it will help i am sure!

Anytime man. If you are mentally prepared, the battle is already won!

Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes!

Cold Turkey.

You will get sick shortly thereafter (I got a bad flu and lost my voice for 3 days), but after that you will be free ;)

I have to add though, don't know if this advice will work for someone who has been smoking for longer than I have been alive. :o

I have heard of a few people getting ill after quitting, but by far in the minority. I made sure a take a lot of vitamins and eat healthy though. Maybe I was one of the lucky ones. I had no side effects or illness or any other after effect. In fact, I started feeling better than while smoking within 4 days (eg. not waking up so tired). But even if you do get sick, it is definitely worth your while!

As for the advice, I can't stress enough how much it is in your head. Once that decision is made, nothing can stop you. My father-in-law had smoked for over 40 years. The doctor told him to quit or he's going to die (he had a bad heart). He did not touch another cigarette again after that. I also thought I am doomed, that there is no way I can quit, and here I am. Proving myself wrong, and I've never felt better about it.

How does he obtain cigarettes with no income?

Umm...

I myself am a non smoker, one good thing ive done with my life, probably will never start.

Problem is im subsidising a family member who dosent work and blows a budget every month on these damm expensive ciggies.

He Tried vaping, not twisp but similar chinese ones, was told by security at malls stop smoking, even though its not real fire, totally artificial.

Tried nicorette, says gives him a headache
Hates anything to do with lectures on why to quit

Hes currently 55 and been smoking since 16 a pack-pack and a half every day since......

Im now subsidizing his habit at the expense of the monthly food budget, and im very unhappy at the fact he is totally unwilling to quit, at this rate he will get a stroke/heart attack and die quickly, but so far doesnt faze him

What advice can you guys give me to try get him to quit?
I dont mind to buy him a twisp, but i need to be sure he will quit or only use twisp from now on.....

Everytime i confront him about smoking he get really angry about it, and fails to see how horrible and expensive this habit is.....

So glad I never started, just pain and suffering lies there....

I'm testing a new quit smoking approach on someone. The problem is that you have the addiction, but there is another factor. Cost. At R40 a packet, it isn't that much money when you buy it. And a person calculates the cost per month, but it is just a number and the money is already gone. So. I changed the cost structure. For every cigarette smoked, the person pays me or owes me the cost of a packet of smokes. Currently R40. So. If the person smokes 4, the cost is R160. The person gets a statement every evening. The person is now gets the effect of the cost must earlier. So far. It's working. The person decreased to 2 cigarettes a day

And what will I do with the money. Buy BAT shares.

I bought a Twisp, then I moved on to an MVP 2.0 and Nautilus Mini, then a Smok 50w with Atlantis and Kayfun v4. I'm off cigarettes and off nicotine. That Atlantis can really chuck clouds at 50w, but local malls don't care so hey :D

Could someone please tell me if Camel Cigarettes, the imported version is still available.
I don't smoke but my wife does and she used to smoke Camel all the years until recently she stopped because she claims Camel Classic is not the same cigarette anymore.

Personally I wish she would stop altogether, the reason I am querying about Camel is that all the years I could handle second hand Camel smoke, but now that she smokes Marlboro Gold I detest the smell.

I quit a year ago after 10 years of smoking, smoked a packet and a half a day.

Champix helped, beware the side effects though. I was quite manic for a while.

Don't know, but I know what you mean about Marlboro - was the only ciggie that gave me a 'hangover'

Good luck

Got a prescription for Zyban, will start next month? Anything that I should be aware of? The doc explained the side effects but I want to know what the most common ones are...

You might go crazy... Those pills are not for the faint hearted. It can mess with you head badly. Ever driven past a donkey and thought "mmmh, what a nice ass"? If not, be prepared because theres a big chance it will happen.

I tried it once, but didn't really do anything for me - no positive or negative effects. Important to note that it was used as an anti-depressant, so you shouldn't take it if you're on anything else. Assuming that as you've already been to your doc, he may have explained that already.

In other news, my quit failed - and failed numerous other times since. Not because of Allen Carr, but quite simply because I couldn't focus at work anymore a few days in - it's got something to do with increased levels of oxygen and cleaner blood being delivered to the brain apparently. The withdrawals were basically unnoticeable, and are similar to how he explained (because the mental addiction is basically gone): a slight empty feeling? I've smoked considerably less, and been conscious of and hated every cigarette since. But I just can't get through sitting at work like a zombie. I've taken next Monday off, so have four days to get through it hardcore mode - I don't have to concentrate and can just veg. I can't find anywhere that states how long this mental haze lasts, but hopefully it'll be better on day 5 when I go back to work. Anyone else experienced it?

I don't mind losing it when I'm at home. Can it be taken at night before bedtime?

Yes you can take it when you want. It wont happen instantly but it may cause you to think "differently" almost permanently while using it.

I once tried it for 2 weeks and left it. Still have a box here at home. Almost a year ago a read Allen Carr and immediatly stopped smoking to this day.

If you have not tried reading Allen Carr then I would personally suggest you do that first before starting with those pills.

If Im not mistaken some people commited suicide whilst using Zyban.

Decided enough is enough.
Started today. Have had 1 cigarette as opposed to about 10 already.
Will not have anymore. Ever.
