How do you escalate a 7-week network failure with Telkom?

Telkom says we have a "network failure" across the whole of our town's DSL due to a congested DSLAM but they are unwilling to give us any idea of when it will be fixed. This also affects wireless internet because there is no other fibre in our area for backhaul, so our WISP business is reliant on load-balanced DSL, which sucks at the best of times but is now threatening to fold our business. We have been told, off the record, that the problem has arisen due to Vodacom moving their traffic onto Telkom infrastructure following their major network failure at the end of June. Vodacom data customers report that their speeds are also reduced lately but not as badly as Telkom-based services. Presumably this is because they're not running through the congested DSLAM.

Telkom-based services are running at between 10% and 25% of normal capacity. Normal was never great (we're not even on the waiting list for 10mbps) but the lines were usable until 5 July - over 6 weeks ago. For about 4 months before that, the lines were slower than normal but not too appalling. The problem was reported but we were told an upgrade would be needed on the DSLAM and "it might take a while".

To cut a long story short, we have been told for nearly 7 weeks that they are "working on it". Things started to happen faster when the MD of a local mine (part-owned by a really big international company) complained that he was having trouble doing his work and got his London management team to lean on Telkom's Pretoria people. It seems that Telkom promised them action to shut them up and then went back to sitting on their bums. Telkom scheduled maintenance on 5 August and then didn't do it (see why not by looking at my comments under the thread). Last week I was told that they had now ordered the DSLAM card and it would be arriving within a week. Now everything's gone quiet again and nobody will answer queries.

We have pulled every string known to man to get more specific and reliable information. We are currently keeping tabs on the situation through about six different contacts, some senior, some junior, some local, some national. Each one has a different story. The call centre (10217) has no story at all; we long ago gave up phoning them more than once a week just to remind them that it's not sorted yet. ALL complaints to Telkom and ICASA have been completely ignored.

What next? Does anyone have a magic contact? I'm half thinking of hiring a private investigator to dig up the personal cellphone number for Pinky Moholi... but I have a horrible feeling that she wouldn't give a toss either. It's something to do with being in Phalaborwa rather than somewhere "important" like Sandton.

sorry, dont have a magic number for you. but maybe you should lodge a complaint with ICASA. things like this might reflect badly on Telkom during the LLU process and might help get them into gear. its one thing if its residential, but another when it starts affecting business.

ps. being very optimistic about ICASA.

LOL. You obviously missed the bit about me having already complained to ICASA - I've done it twice and they don't even reply. At least Telkom sent an auto-reply! :erm:

You toyitoyi in front of their offices

I'm not sure if that was supposed to be serious... (a) our Telkom office is shutting at the end of this month due to being uneconomical and (b) I don't think the dolts that sit in the office would take the slightest bit of notice even if they weren't worried about losing their jobs at the end of the month... Their standard response to everything is "I don't know" *shrug* or "We can't do that".

oh sorry about that :P i'll blame it on the drugs :D

when is their next agm? buy a share and go complain there. they generally open up the floor for questions. one of my friends did that with another company. his problem got solved quickly ;)

bushguru --> one thing to know about a Telkom "network fault" They cannot be escalated.

My company has been in the same boat (almost), where several of our clients land up with a network fault and Telkom refuses to escalate it. This is even through the WSC. They always just say that "Telkom Network Faults are already a main priority so they cannot be escalated."

Good luck with this because telkom doesnt actually give a s h i t...

Their next AGM is coming up very soon - 30 August in Midrand. Wish that wasn't such a long way from us. It burns my a*** to pay money to get Telkom to do their job! But maybe that's the only way.:(

Thanks, I discovered that a few weeks ago - but only after several weeks of them telling me they *were* escalating it (and even giving me an escalation number! WTF?!) You're right: they don't give a proverbial.

Only 7 weeks without Telkom? How about 12 weeks!

Telkom scheduled maintenance on 5 August and then didn't do it (see why not by looking at my comments under the thread). Last week I was told that they had now ordered the DSLAM card and it would be arriving within a week. Now everything's gone quiet again and nobody will answer queries. [/QUOTE]

I know 7 weeks is a long time especially when you are running a business. I am in the exact same boat (No service and own business) but the difference is that my telkom line is off for 12 weeks now! Apparently a cable has been stolen but they are in no rush to fix it. No promised feedback except an autoreply SMS have been recieved. Today I was offered to have my voicecalls forwarded to a number of my choice. the service costs R5 per month and I will be responsible for costs of the forwarded message. Imagine that, if I agree to those terms and conditions, Telkom gets rewarded twice for a telkom to telkom call (The originator pays the first call and I am responsible for the forwarded call). What an inventive scheme have they came up with this time! With this scheme, it would not make any business sense for telkom to restore my service!

I think that I must rather cancel the service (That I dont have anyway) and get an alternative for my business to survive, but I am realy upset with the costs that I incurred which must now be written off. Besides the printed matter like letter heads, Flyers and business cards, there are equipment that can only work on Telkom's network like a PABX, cordless handsets, printer/fax machines, fax modems and a ADSL2 router that is now destined for re-cycling. There is also other costs like an uncapped ADSL account that was kept open for the last three months, in the hope that Telkom will restore my service!

hat next? Does anyone have a magic contact? I think that you are under the wrong impression about "Important Areas" where you have mentioned Sandton. I am on the East Rand and the Telkom exchange is just 250meters away. I know for fact that the exchange equipment is OK and the lines to the exchange is also OK. It is only a portion of cable that is part of the 250m to the exchange that is not connected (stolen), but there is absolutely no interest from Telkom to replace this cable.

I therefore urge businesses not to become too dependent on their Telkom services. It is a sign that Telkom is failling. They are now very fragile after their major R7Bn loss in Nigeria. It is a risk that I can not longer afford to be part of. I have seen very few business that recovers from such an ordeal. I think it is best that we take cognisance of the facts, stop complaining and start creating alternative solutions. Nothing lasts forever - Not Telkom, Nor the US domination of world curencies - and certainly will neither of us last forever. Au revoir Telkom!

i think telkom might be putting off investment in infrastructure because of the looming LLU. i mean 'why should we pay if in a few months maybe we have to give it away anyway', you know?
to serve a WISP, i'd see if DFA could make me a deal to splice into neotel or something

We looked into splicing into fibre in a relatively nearby area but it is ludicrously expensive - the monthly standing charge (without data) is more than our turnover.

Maybe all the WISPs in Phalaborwa need to unite, draw in some of the other IT-related businesses that need fast access to invest and everyone pool their clients and their resources and we get fibre and stick it to Telkom AND Vodacom. I'll provide "cloud" services for the local businesses and run the datacentre. Sound good? *eg*

(edit) Think of how quickly we'll take away business from Telkom in this town.

(edit)(edit) hehe ... finally i can post. they wouldn't let me post on the account i registered in 2008 ?!

All I can say is good luck. I moved three weeks ago, new ADSL line is completely @%#*%#. Lodged a fault...you guessed it...they say it is a general network fault. Problem since 18 Mar. I haven't been able to get a shred of info out of Telkom as to the actual problem, time to completion etc. Nothing. The message between the lines is simply "sorry, no Adsl for you buddy, get over it."

I feel your pain! We only started getting information when one of our customers put us in touch with someone at Telkom who seemed to have his finger on the pulse. He's their Telkom business account manager for a totally different region so goodness only knows how he found anything out since even our regional senior managers didn't seem to be able to get information. Telkom internal communication seems to be completely arbitrary. Good luck.
