I'm 6 or 7, with butter, thinly and evenly spread on.

I might add marmite or Apricot jam and grated cheddar cheese...
 
Brown side up. Meh, lightly toasted, 4-3, but with scrambled eggs I would go 6-7. It has been some time since I have eaten 'white' bread.

Mine does the exact same. I absolutely hate most toasters for this reason - but I don't want to spend way more on a toaster to get rid of the problem, so I just live with it.

Also, the butter should be thicker than the bread.
 
just this morning I did not see some one at work set the toaster to 5 and my toast was way too toasted lol like a 8 and i prefer 4
