Having seen some spectacular wedding photos from a local wedding photographer who shoots her weddings with an advanced point and shoot I can tell you that argument doesn't fly with me.

Some wedding photographers seem to think of themselves as prima-donnas of the photography world. It's photography, not rocket science.

Can't remember exactly - except we had to pay for two nights accommodation and food for two people AND travelling costs on top of the R23k ...

As long as you look back and feel that was money well spent that's all that matters at the end of the day.

So got married about two months ago and I can give you the breakdown:

Venue (just under 70 people, includes food, chappel, PA system, decor, but not: Priest, Flowers, confetti) = R30k
Photographer = R5k
Dress, Flowers, misc. = R10k

Then it depends on whether you want to buy a suit, or rent one. I rented because I never wear a suit X 4 (Brother, Brother in law, Dad, myself) = R6k

Honeymoon = still saving... :) Planning a trip to either Thailand or the US somewhere.

furk that. I cannot see a photo album as being worth R26 or 27 thousand rand all in. Ever.

i always look at the way the couple posed and stuff and angles the photograper took the pic

cause most images are well shopped to make it look better

@ the sailor, damn if your wedding is out in the jungle then he needs to be paid for accomodation and travel but i have seen the normal price for good photography with print outs and bla bla is around 10k

i know this one company charges like R14k and you get HD video and a photo booth and stuff

quite nice

Well, there's my point. Having someone who actually has skill take your pictures makes a huge difference.

On average, do you think anyone who shoots a wedding with a P&S is going to take good pictures? Really?

Some wedding photographers seem to think of themselves as prima-donnas of the photography world. It's photography, not rocket science.

That's true, but not sure what your point is.

Mostly ego and luck.

And training. And equipment. And end product.

Ah photoshop. All I can say us it's a good thing weddings didn't exist when photographers shooting film had to rely on skill.

If you can't see the difference between a 5k and 20k photographer, then
a) there's no difference and the 20k guy is over-charging (or the 5k guy is undercharging)
b) you have no idea what makes a good photo and what not, so then don't spend 20k just to say "I spend 20k". You'll be happy with the 5k option.

Then that's why you're better off booking the cheapest photographer you can afford.

Why the name change, btw?

I don't agree with that. I've seen some terrible wedding photos taken with the best equipment.
Photography isn't luck - especially when you are photographing people. You actually need to manage them a bit and get them to co-operate with you ideas and then make the photo look good.

I say pay a little more and get good photos since that is really all you get to keep after the party is over.

Then there is the whole cheap = bad quality, expensive = good quality story but that is why these people usually have portfolios you can look at before taking your pick.

Do you realise that, with the exception of the strikethrough, you've just described every single genre of professional photography?

Yup, which goes to my point of perceived value.

I'm not the one arguing that there isn't a scale of quality in these genres and they shouldn't be compensated accordingly, so I'm not sure what your point is. Joey L is going to charge more for commercial photography than some two steps above amateur from Brakpan. He's worth it. For some reason you seem think a higher price is related exclusively to ego in the wedding photography industry.

Or is wedding photography the only genre where they shouldn't charge more because good photos are a result of mostly ego and luck?
