Ok I'm not married yet but am at that age where everyone around me is getting married so from what I've seen, here are some comments on an affordable wedding:
(Its a bit of a repeat of what lots of people said but these things are important)
1) Off-season. Venues are often much cheaper if you get married out of season / during the week. I've seen a Friday night wedding cost R27k vs R50k for the same venue on a Saturday.
2) DIY. See what you can make yourselves. Cutting back on small things can make a difference in the end. eg. R15 for a home-made invitation vs R80 for one made by the pro...
3) Use & Abuse. If you have family or friends who can help out with things like flowers, dress, cake etc. don't be shy to ask them. They don't have to do it for free but can give you a good price as your wedding gift.
4) Reception. Not sure but I don't think there are laws regarding a 3 course meal being compulsory.. My dream is to have a tea-party wedding
Just don't stress about impressing anyone. Do what makes you happy. Unfortunately if a fancy wedding will make you happy then be prepared to fork out...
