That's a lot of money that one could spend on A) better living B) better honey moon or C) buy her stuff for her house :p

Life is good enough already, what honeymoon, and house has everything we need ;)

Yup. It's a bitch when you've worked your ass off for 20 years...

If u have the money no problem but I am more hitting on the people who just don't have it.... then it becomes a bit to much

If you have the money and you want an extravagant wedding, do it.

The only rule is don't spend money you don't have, and do whatever the hell you want, it's YOUR wedding.

Agreed fully.

The "wedding industry" is a joke. They're completely exploitative of people who are trying to live out a dream they've had since they were kids. I had one photographer quote us R23000 for the day ... Really? R23000?
The cost per head for the reception... R500 plus? For a buffet meal? Come on now...

Ok I'm not married yet but am at that age where everyone around me is getting married so from what I've seen, here are some comments on an affordable wedding:
(Its a bit of a repeat of what lots of people said but these things are important)

1) Off-season. Venues are often much cheaper if you get married out of season / during the week. I've seen a Friday night wedding cost R27k vs R50k for the same venue on a Saturday.

2) DIY. See what you can make yourselves. Cutting back on small things can make a difference in the end. eg. R15 for a home-made invitation vs R80 for one made by the pro...

3) Use & Abuse. If you have family or friends who can help out with things like flowers, dress, cake etc. don't be shy to ask them. They don't have to do it for free but can give you a good price as your wedding gift.

4) Reception. Not sure but I don't think there are laws regarding a 3 course meal being compulsory.. My dream is to have a tea-party wedding :)

Just don't stress about impressing anyone. Do what makes you happy. Unfortunately if a fancy wedding will make you happy then be prepared to fork out...

Ours cost about R20K total with 200+ guests. That amount was far bellow what a lot of our peers spent. Was nice and casual with finger food in a church hall and a simple ceremony at our local church. Can't believe how much some people spent on a wedding. A friend of mine had his parents spend R500K on his wedding and he could not afford to buy himself a home to live in for 5 years after his marriage. Personally I would have preferred a cheap wedding and a small starter home (or deposit) for that much cash.

My wife and I sat down and started drawing up our guest list real early on.
When we hit the part with my uncle and his 4 married daughters and their kids, and her aunt and uncle who would have to fly in, but only when he can take time off his schedule as ambassador - we started trimming the list.

The trick was to do this while not upsetting anyone.
Our wedding was held in a small chapel on a horse farm - could only seat 14 people. And the reception at a boutique hotel that had a 'no children under 13' clause. Her parents, mine, siblings and spouses and a few close friends.
