You going to want to set up a decent living environment for you and your new bride,so take this into consideration when you budget for your wedding.
Its always good to have some spare cash for these things instead of blasting all your resources on a wedding/honeymoon.

Smart people will do this first, and then save up for a wedding.

Like somebody else said, decide on a budget and work backwards. You don't need to spend big to have a special wedding and all the money you save on your wedding could go towards your house.

Absolutely agree with you on this... I have been saving since I started work (3 years ago) and this year we're buying a house and we've both paid of our cars. So next year the wedding will be a breeze with a savings, and our parents will sort the honeymoon out if needed...

Apparently the average is about a years salary. The more people earn the more they spend on their wedding but it works out at about a years salary.

Dual incomes for the win. Now it's only half a year's salary :D

My wife saved for 6yrs * for her dream wedding. She has her own business and all her extra cash went into this fund. Some women actually start saving when they should be bridesmaids. End of day my wife got the wedding she wanted: wine farm; all her family; flowers as she wanted; 4 piece string classical orchestra; etc

(* Reason why we had R30K spare cash after the wedding).

Mmm, no, I would say about 25% of my wife and my yearly salary in our case.

With the honeymoon and rings, would say about half.

Regarding the honeymoon - you can of course get away a whole lot cheaper if you stay in SA. We went to the Maldives and my wife loved every moment of it - first time she was overseas and I'm glad I went for the kind of laid back island vacation - we just relaxed and didn't end up running around to sight see. Most overseas trips I've been on is more like "tours" - you try to cram in as much as possible sights and events and come back more tired with sore feet - not my ideal honeymoon!

Mauritius is close, "overseas", beautiful and not nearly as expensive as Seychelles or Maldives. Plane tickets lot cheaper. So is Zanzibar!

We are currently working on 70 people for about R35000-R40000 excluding honeymoon and rings. Getting married in October. A nice site that helped us was www.Perdekoop.co.za as they have sample budgets and categories so you can work out your budget.

A mate of mine married recently ... it set him back quite a bit ... the wedding itself (venue, food and dress) is ok ... it is the all the other stuff that kills you ...

the ring, the honeymoon, the photographer, etc.

A trend I'm starting to notice more and more is that people only invite adult couples-no children. If you add the kids to the couples it increases the invitation list quite drastically.

and Im not talking Prince William and Kate here

im talking average earner, drive a polo, eat at primi etc etc

It really depends on what you want, and how extravagant you want to go. One thing I did say to my wife, is that we not going to be four years into our wedding and we still paying it off.

My wife and I we had a nice and close family wedding in Paternoster.

Congrats and best of luck.
