Not really. The term soulmates doesn't necessarily refer to souls as they're described in religious or new age terms. It's simply a description for a special kind of affinity and compatibility with someone. No need to burden the concept with superstitious and mystical nonsense.

Do I believe there's some kind of mystical, foretold-by-destiny kind of link between 2 specific people? No.
Do I believe some humans are more compatible (on specific fronts) than others? Yes.

The soulmate concept typically has two important parts to it. The first is that these two people are bonded for life. The second is that these two people are more special to each other than any other person could be to either of them.

If you think about it, neither makes any sense if you are an atheist. Is it really possible to meet all of the billions of people on earth to find your soulmate?

I don't see any particular reason why those 2 elements have to be part of it. Do some people use it like that? Sure. But it seems... unnecessary. Wiki's description makes sense: "A soulmate (or soul mate) is a person with whom one has a feeling of deep or natural affinity. This may involve similarity, love, romance, friendship, intimacy, sexuality, sexual activity, spirituality, or compatibility and trust." One could have a soulmate in a purely platonic way, too. One could also have a soulmate but with whom you are romantically incompatible, also. Lots of interesting combinations available.

But yeah, if you want to use that rigid definition then it's quite irrational. Doesn't mean there aren't atheists who don't believe in it, though. Atheism is merely about non-belief in gods. One can easily not believe in gods while still maintaining other irrational, silly beliefs, i.e. healing crystals, soulmates, reikki, karma, reincarnation etc.

I found your post interesting because I have recently been thinking about these same things.

As an atheist, I don't believe in souls, and I haven't believed in souls for over 15 years. But isn't it weird that I believed in the existence of soulmates, despite not believing in souls?

I never stopped to think about what I really wanted from relationships. I had been so conditioned to think that marriage for the rest of my life was what would make me happy, that I never stopped to think about it.

Bud, as much as I like the accolation, I believe everything has a soul. Dogs, cats, budgies, even flies. I'm close to being an atheist, but chaos theory doesn't explain the universe completely. I'm intelligent enough to at least know that I have no clue either way.

I hope that when I die there is an afterlife, even though I don't believe in it.

What I do know at least is what I want.

I once told HO,as a strong believer in the afterlife for reasons yet to be revealed, I do not think that she is my Soul mate, even though I love her to the ends of the world.....

I am still paying for this statement.....

you see, everybody wants to be madly loved. if somebody does not even think there is a possibility of you being soul mates, it says how you see the love :p

I'm in an open relationship, but i feel like my relationship has made me a lot more mature and open minded about the world. I'm also grateful to have someone that gets me even with all my bs and quirks

Similar situation. Couldn't be happier.
