And Telkom abuses everyone... Soweto included

By the way - anyone having problems with their installation can contact Ivan Charles at charleim@telkom.co.za - he is the manager for the non voice provisioning help-desk.

While I realise that the numbers particpating in this poll are to limited to reveal any meaningful stats I wonder if there is any relationship between a realtively speedy ADSL installation and geographical location eg Gauteng, Westen Cape etc. In other words are Telkom emplyees perhaps more efficient in various areas?

It's all about who you know... we order about 2 or 3 ADSL lines a month, and find that the average installation time is 1 to 2 weeks. We simply comunicate directly with the office that dispatches the technicians and ask when one of them have a free hour or 2 maybe a saturday afternoon. They get paid overtime , we get the lines installed.

Self installation is also a good option if you can't get a technician onsite, but can get one to your exchange (to plug your line into the DSLAM).

I ordered in October. To be told no ports available. My neighbour have ADSL but Telkom told me no more ports available. They said that project was created and that new ports will be installed end of November. 1st week in December I called to get a date. They said that it would be installed within the next week or so. Week later I called and was told that there was a problem and that the ports will only be installed by 30 December (which year I did not ask) and that I must phone 1st week in January to get my date. I phoned Tuesday 3 January. They escalated the call and I was informed that Theresa will get back to me within 2 days with my date as the ports was completed. Today I phoned again. You guessed it..... Now all of a sudden the ports was removed (because Tuesday they were finished and now they havent been installed). They told me that it will only be done by end of January. This is crazy. Nothing against little towns, but you'd think that in Randburg, JHB the infrasructure should be in place. I stay 1km away from Cresta mall and Telkom is unable to install my ADSL within 3months.

Well...

Telkom just missed their forth appointment. I phoned AGAIN and asked about self-install. They said that they would need to cancel the order and re-order and there would be a cancellation fee... naah - I'd better wait for their technician. What a joke.

8 months later I got ADSL

I am pleased to announce that after waiting 1 week short of 8 months, Telkom arrived to install my ADSL line. I now know why it took so long....the 'techie' arrived at 1:15pm and left at 5:30pm. Why? Because he spent 10 minutes in the house from 1:15pm to 1:25pm, then disappeared with his van to the box in the street. At 5:20pm he returned and plugged in his modem to test the line. It worked! I asked him why he was gone for so long. He said, "Mmmm...problems!" Oh well, Telkom all is forgiven. But I will still be changing to SNO even if they are more expensive, just to spite you.

This whole thread is just so bloody depressing. Why do we have to battle so much to get a service which we are going to pay for? I want to rip my hair out in despair and frustration.

And what does is all boil down to in simple terms? We have no choice if we want an always on, 'hi-speed' landline connection.

Dont give me that rubbish that we have Sentech or WBS or 3g as alternatives. Bollocks. They are all equally expensive and I personally can get no signal from ANY other of them so Im forced to get Telkom DSL.
