How long does it take to get an ADSL line from Telkom?

I've been using 3G for my home internet connection up to now, but I'm thinking of getting an ADSL line installed... and since I'm pretty impatient... could anyone give me an indication of how long this normally takes to get done?

Also, I'll probably use around 5Gb of data a month, so is the DoBroadband 5Gb package they offer good value, or should I rather look somewhere else. From what I've seen so far it looks like their price isn't bad.

PS. I don't have a land line with them at the moment.

Ok, for me so far. I applied a week ago for a closer package (I dont have a line either, and this way I avoid installation charges). I'll follow up today to find out when they will install the line, telkom say a line installation will take anything from 7 to 21 days. From there I will apply and do a self install. that should take just a couple of days.

If you stay in a gated complex, ask your neighbours if any of them have ADSL... this could be a problem!

You need to find out whether or not your exchange supports ADSL. If it does then the next hurdle is whether there are any free ports available. If not you can wait for months before one is installed for you or one becomes available. I waited close on 4 months for a port.

Some of my neighbours have ADSL, so I should be able to get a line installed. So should I first get the normal telephone line installed and then apply for the ADSL line or can I do this at the same time?

Just call them everyday to get a progress report on your order. That's the fastest way to get your line.

I ordered mine last month (new analogue line and DSL) and I was online within a week. :D

Sweet! That's my kind of turn around time. I'll just bug them a couple of times every day :D

If you apply for both at the same time you pay the adsl installation costs. so I applied for the line first and then I'll apply for the self install. that way no installation costs. :D

I called on the 2nd of March to have dsl activated on my line and was called on the 5th of March to say it that the line was ready and enabled. Fastest service I ever got from Telkom

That is good timing from Telkom

 charming, we are off to a good start again. Telkom can only help me on the 23rd of March and they didnt even confirm the date. And I am not at home that day. So much for Telkom phoning first to confirm.

i have got a connection in less than a week before, and the longest was about 3 weeks. with a new phone line from scratch

We just had a new line installed and ADSL enabled.

We applied for Closer 2 to have the new line put in (thereby avoiding installation fee's). At the same time I did this at the Telkom Direct shop I filled in all the forms for ADSL self install.

A week later the line was installed, I then went into the Telkom Direct shop with the newly provided telephone number and the person who did the Closer 2 application got my ADSL self-install application out of his file, filled in the new number and did the self install application. 5 days later (today) the ADSL is up and running.

So all in all just under 2 weeks to go from no line at all to ADSL. Obviously this also depends on whether your exchange has ports available.

I would also suggest if you can, do it all through a Telkom Direct branch.

Great, thanks. Sounds like it won't take that long then. Will do the line application and then ADSL self install option.

I just had a line and ADSL put in, but they told me that I cannot take the self install option within 30 days of applying for a phone line (actually that is what they told my wife....). Took around 10 days for the line and 30 minutes to apply to Afrihost.com and get myself up and running.

Mine was done in 4 days.....from no line to line with ADSL. Got closer 5 and did a self install so there was no installation charge at all! Trick I think is to follow up everyday with someone at the Telkom Direct shop.....see them in person, put a name to the face/voice.

All I get from the responses in this thread is that the land line will take anything from 4 days (if you nag, beg on your knees) to 4 months or more.
I'm not suprised at the inconsistent "service" we have all come to expect from Telkom and you can expect the same level of inconsistency with line faults.

Was it the leopard or the cheetah that changed its spots? I forget which now.

So the answer to the thread title is, how long is a piece of string?

Agreed. Took them 5 weeks to upgrade me from DSL 384 to 4Mb/s. In the end it came down to a fair amount of calls and badgering.
