How long will the current data promotion still be available?

According to recent newspaper adverts the current Cell C data promotion (2GB or 5GB pm for a year with or without a modem) is only available until the end of this month (December). But a local Cell C rep told me it will run at least until the end of January. I cannot find an answer to this on the Cell C website. Anyone know?

from what i remember the cell c person i spoke to, 26 january.

So dont wait too long since i'm sure there's likely to be a minor rush and you don't want to get screwd on stock.

Cell C rep. Please could you let us know what the deal is.

For a lot of us, we are currently out of coverage as the rest of Joburg will only launch in January. Will we miss out on this deal? If we purchase the data bundle now; that means that we loose out on 2 months data.

Its not like the rest of Joburg is out of coverage and will launch in January. I have coverage, unfortunately it is only edge coverage, I can still take up the data deal and still get my fair use of the data. Its a matter of weeks and we should have some decent 3G coverage, I would still take up the offer now in anticipation of the launch of 3G in 6 weeks time.

EDGE speeds are pathetic on Cell C. If I don't have WCDMA signal even with relatively good EDGE signal, I struggle to load even few pages properly. EDGE is only useful for browsing on your cellphone.

I disagree completely with you.

1. You cannot be sure that you will have coverage end January. R3000 is a lot of money to gable with.
2. Cell C EDGE speeds with the current promotional bundles are so slow that Google does not even open. The speeds are less than dial up. It is not usable at all.

Shred what is your location in Jhb? I am situated on the west rand, I get pathetic speeds however I am in a suitable position that allows me to still search on google etc. My current (12.12.2010) balance on my 2GB monthly contract is 1412.27 MB which means I have used +/- 600MB since the beginning of the month (12 days ago), this has been achieved using an edge connection.

You could be right and assume that not all of Jhb will have 3G speeds come the end of February, however I have it on good authority that I will have 3G speeds as the tower in my neighbourhood is being upgraded.

2GB suits my needs even at edge speeds (I would like 3G speeds though to be honest) and at the price of R41.63 per GB makes the offer light on my wallet.

Germiston. Where I am EDGE is not usable at all. I have someone that brought a speed stick so that I could check.

Just to illuminate the question which started this thread: I now have one of the current Cell C newspaper ads stating clearly at the bottom that the offer is valid until 31 January (although the header above that does bear the mandatory 'While stocks last').

I just with Cell C would stop playing mind games and just tell us when the "real" Joburg launch will happen and when the promotion is valid until.

By doing this, they are actually loosing sales not gaining them. Come on Cell C, wake up a bit.

Does anyone know what is going to happen at the end of the 12 month period?

Will we be able to renew our subscriptions at the same rate per MB?

No, nobody knows. Cell C haven't disclosed anything. It would be stupid of them not too though IMO.

The question is even if they increase the price next year January/February by how much? If they make it from R3000 to R3200 - not a big deal anyway but if they jump from R3000 to R6000 then it's a problem and the promise for cheap wireless bandwith in SA is still going to stay a mirage on the horizon.

Paying R3k for a 60Gb package and modem if you only have Edge is stupid - I doubt you will be able to use 5Gb/month!

If I buy a 60Gb package before the promotion ends but doesn't activate it immediately - how long can I wait before I activate it?

afaik, the store activates it for you immediately - as part of their check list of things they need to do before you leave

Yes it's supposed to be activated in-store. If Cell C is still operating their original policy though, wait until after tomorrow to buy/activate it: in theory if you buy after the 15th of the month, you get that month's 2GB (or 5GB) free and your 'proper' year's data will only start on January 1! See separate threads on this aspect.

Based on Cell C's punt to focus on customer service; I have quite surprised at the Cell C rep's failure to respond to this thread.
