If the bill is less than R500, I give a standard tip of R50. Above R500 I tip 10% or more.

I cannot remember when I last had "bad service" from a waiter. "Bad service" is normally out of the waiter's control. They are not responsible for the quality of the food, or poor decision making by the manager, like not having enough waiters on a particularly busy night etc.

Anyway, I have sympathy for waiters, because I used to wait tables to supplement my income in my younger years.

I don't tip a fixed percentage.

If the bill is R430, I tell them to ring up R450. If it's R920, I tell them to ring up R950.

Ain't nobody got time for calculating percentages because I'll probably be on my 3rd shot jaggers and on my fourth beer.

My daughter used to work as a waitress while she was at uni, so I know how little they make. On top of that, they were still expected to give 10% of their tips to the kitchen staff. Sometimes her parking at the mall cost more than she made in tips for an entire shift, let alone pay for the fuel to drive there and back.

I always give minimum 10%, higher if the service is exceptional or the bill is small. I have given up to 30+%.

use a payment app (e.g fnb scan and pay)?

1. open app
2. put in amount
3. adjust tip percentage (if needed)
4. pay with app

This is me. I just round up to the nearest R100 and make life easier for everyone - unless that waiter has been really rubbish I always give something.

At my regular spots where I have favorite waiters, I will always make sure that I tip in cash. Some places force servers to split the tip pool with kitchen and other backroom staff, leaving them with very little in the way of actual take-home money.

Typically 10-15%, this is different if its a smaller bill. Help others where you can - if you can.
On the back of this nothing urks me more than a fixed tip unless a large table thats ok then.

We ate at La Petite Colombe in Franshoek just two of us, throws in their 10% service charge, might have given more but didnt as they just went ahead and included one....

10%, but more at my favourite coffee places even though I just order from the counter. They are doing the lord's work.

other: depends on how hot she is

usually: 10% unless the service was truly horrible (then less) or truly excellent (then more)

but I see a worrying trend of places that already include the tip on the bill or showing an indicative tip amount on the bill using 12.5% instead of 10% ... like they're trying to make the base higher through brainwashing, f-off!

Anything less than 20% is poverty mentality according to @Willie Trombone. Even if the food is cold, you must tip 20% else they spit in your food.

Love a good extortion story.

I’m gonna be in NY for the next week… I don’t wanna play this game
