I try for a minimum of 12.5-15%.

For the places i regular, its closer to 20%. (Ideally the tip comes to a minimum of R50-100 on any bill.)

I wont go hungry because of that extra bit, and it makes a difference in their lives, so I'm happy to do it.

Typically 10-15%, this is different if its a smaller bill. Help others where you can - if you can.
Ja I just struggle a bit when you add wine etc. to the bill. Same work on the part of the waiter, just a more expensive bottle of wine that came out. Guess it's the same with an expensive steak vs a cheap salad. Also the kitchen staff typically see nothing of that tip. But ja - never less than 10%. Had Chinese a few days ago, R200 bill, R40 tip.

I tip 10% because people will look at me funny if I don't tip. People need to learn to pay their staff themselves.

If you guys actually get bad service do you tell them what they did wrong?

Because not giving a tip and leaving it at that, they will think you are a cheapskate.

Generally 10%. At my local pub, a bit more, I like to keep those waiters sharp. They deliver my freshly poured pint as I sit down.

Decent service 10% rounded up to the next R10

And I normally give the tip in cash.

Poor service 0 to 5%

I wish that tipping was not the norm at restaurants in SA. I would much prefer a restuarant pay its staff an agreed wage and charge me a full service price on the menu. That said, I know that I'm not able to change the system and tip based on service.

To get less than 10% you must have really done something dumb.
15% would be about average.
20% for good service or on small bills.

That said, scan to pay is making life difficult. Some restaurants don't allow custom tip rand values, only set %s. I used to like round numbers for the total bill, including the tip.

10%. Less if service is crap. Only way I'll ever tip more than 10% is if it's me and the bartender, and we are chatting and then he slides me a free drink or something.

The pandemic made me a bit more sensitive to the plight of these kinds of workers. Even when service ain't great, I can't help but think they're still a person like me with their own struggles and they may just be having a bad day.

15-30%

Okes becoming retarded tipping Americans.

They get a salary. Bring me my food.

If I'm ordering R1000 worth, not a fck am I tipping R100.

Who are these okes dropping 30% lmao

Typically 20-50% (‘Murica). I go lower in the range for expensive meals and higher for cheaper ones. For really bad service, I have no problem giving zero, or significantly more for exceptionally good service.

Couple of venues I have worked at would pool tips so even garden staff could get something...I feel this is right as everyone contributes to a great venue.
If you were caught not pooling your tips then you would carry on getting what was given directly to you but nothing from the pool ,which after a conference or function could be a fair amount....
