Typically 20-50% (‘Murica). I go lower in the range for expensive meals and higher for cheaper ones. For really bad service, I have no problem giving zero, or significantly more for exceptionally good service.

Who will ever want to become a chef or a restaurant owner in america with guys tipping like this. Just become a waiter instead. The waiters end up earning more than the chefs and the restaurant owners with people tipping at these rates. The actual food bill has to pay for the ingredients, the chef, the owner and the rest of the bills to keep the place running.

The tips typically go into a pool and get distributed to all (well, not the owner) in the US.

Talking tips... a bit of a tangent... but how much for petrol attendents these days?

Depends on the service. Bad service 0%. Average 5%. Good service 10%. Exceptional 15%.

My coffee is R25 a cup, I tip the person R10 on top of that always. I also appreciate it if they can understand sign language. But most people like it when I just write what I want on my phone. In general, waiters are always nice to me and do their best to communicate as best they can. So big hugs to all you people in the industry, you are awesome

If I pay cash and they do not bring change that makes it easy to pay a reasonable tip from it then I do not tip at all. It is not my duty to carry change around so that I can give a tip.
This is one thing waiter do not ever seem to learn.

Really depends.
Just yesterday:
  • Rude and disinterested (maybe dronk?) petrol attendant = R0.
  • Waitress at Spur R100/or around 25%.

10% - 15%
Be glad you are not living in one of the bigger cities in the USA. There the minimum is 20% and is quite often mandatory.
