Typically 20-50% (‘Murica). I go lower in the range for expensive meals and higher for cheaper ones. For really bad service, I have no problem giving zero, or significantly more for exceptionally good service.
The tips typically go into a pool and get distributed to all (well, not the owner) in the US.Who will ever want to become a chef or a restaurant owner in america with guys tipping like this. Just become a waiter instead. The waiters end up earning more than the chefs and the restaurant owners with people tipping at these rates. The actual food bill has to pay for the ingredients, the chef, the owner and the rest of the bills to keep the place running.
