friend of mine earns (takes home after tax) about 300K per month. (seriously). and he's always broke, or always complains he doesnt earn enough...

its gonna set u back around 300K for the course...

It's not the cost of the course - it's 2 - 3 years full time training in labs to get there! it's not easy - 10 Years ago you could do it if you put your mind to it in a year - you now looking at much much harder prac exam!

only 30% of people pass that & it costs 100K a time to do. & if you start it by the time you pass you would have all the exp you need and should be earning a good enough salary anycase!

It also depends on where you work. I can get about 10k more if I am willing to work in Cape Town and not Stellenbosch. Then again the costs involved for me to work in Cape Town will be higher.

 I wouldn't get out of bed for those salaries.... seems very low for 'top earners'

Just to survive, be able to afford a house, 2 Cars and send kids to school one should at least be earning over R 20k per month and then have a spouse salary also. A combined salary take home of over R 25k or your fk'd

Sad aint it
That's why I only have 1 car (fully paid) no kids and a house of 1.1m.
In my case things got worse when my wife decided to start her PhD... so now she is an expence too. At least it is a good excuse not to have kids :D I hate kids...

However this is what bugs me: Most respondants seem to gross between 15k and 30k. Even if you nett 30k how can you afford : a car, a house, life insurance, retirement annuity, house insurance, car insurance, municipal costs, petrol, internet, cellphone, groceries, electricity..... it is impossible ! :(

The survey graphs certainly try to make a big deal of gender. Most of the graphs start at 0, but have a look at the gender graph - accentuate any small difference as it starts close to the lower value...

Mmm, I also think these figures are way way too low. We hire based only on experience, diploma's and even degree's means absolutely *****. A guy with 2 years exp should earn no less than 20k. Depending on language maybe even more.

My 2c anyway.

So would your company hire somebody with no experience but at a lower rate?

And to think you need at least a minimum combined income of 35K a month to qualify for a home loan of 1.0m :'(

But that is Gross which is pretty easy.

It's the take home on R 35k combined Gross that is pretty small :o
The take home on that is about R 20k ??

Unfortunately we're not hiring at the moment. But email me your details then we will put on file.

This sux that i just started a new job i would have emailed my details too... :(

oh well i guess i will have to push for a salary increase seeing as I need something over 15k pm with 6yrs experience :P

Qualifying is not a big problem, the problem comes in when you realise that you now need life insurance and then home contents insurance. After that you realise that you need to pay some sort of levy and municipal fees. Then while you are at it with the life insurance you start to think about retirement and an investment fund of sorts.

Then a few months along the line your spouse loses their job/starts their PhD.... and you are in for a rough time as petrol prices soar along with interest rates. I know, I have been there.

Say you get a homeloan of 700k. You will be paying back R8000 per month at prime -2 (you get that if you are lucky). Your life insurance will be about R600 if you are healthy. The minimum home contents insurance (R100k) will be R100 per month. If you buy in a security complex levies will be between R400 and R1000. Rates and taxes will be about R500 and electricity can be up to R500. You are 25 years old, want to retire at 55 and maintain your current lifestyle, that will be R5000 per month.

That already is about R15k per month and you still do not have food, car and petrol, cellphone, internet....

I look at people my age buying nice cars worth about R200k+ and wonder to myself if they 1) are stinking rich or 2) have not planned for their future at all.

The reality is that once you start hitting management your qualifications are important.

Do yourself a favour, go to university and get a good degree. It will pay off at the beginning of your career and towards the end of it.
