What's the Fuss About?

One thing goes down, another goes up... in the end we're not saving anything at all... merely the illusion of saving something.

The reduction is a slap in the face. It's like Telkom did this to keep their complainants quiet for another year when they garnish off another 15%...or hike it by 30% because of inflation. Telkom prices are starting to go the trend the petrol price is going: Down 15c, Up 45c. At least the whole world suffers with petrol price hikes, not just South Africans.

Per GB Billing should be added to the Spreadsheet

We need a comparative spreadsheet to show the % increase/decrease in the overall pricing structure of ADSL to compare the prices before and after November 2005 when per GB Billing was introduced on that same link.
1Gb/2Gb/3Gb/5Gb/10Gb/30Gb Accounts before and after November 2005 with the new duplicated ADSL "line" rental charges proportioned in.
Members of the public must be informed.

It is what Telkom doesn't tell the consumer that can potentially cost the most.
Consumers who use their ADSL connection for emails and a spot of browsing are not hard hit by per GB Billing, but what about the rest of the consumers that play games on local Telkom gaming servers or wish to "download life" as Telkom claims we can do with ADSL, then one or two GB's are not enough.

One player on Battlefield 2 with voice comms enabled draws 15Kb alone.
Calculate that for an hour.
Per GB Billing is not fair at R75 per GB or more, when one adds that to the whole picture.

You would need to know what telkoms "median residential bill" is but considering the decrease in call charges it will probably comply.

The 12% at the end of the table, is there to give a realistic comparison with the 24% ADSL reduction as claimed by Telkodemonopolies - add the following together:
3% + 15% +13% + 15% == 46%
now divide by 4 to get an average of 11.5% [note rounding in the 4 percentages will make a difference to this calculation].

It's probably even worse then that. If a higher percentage of clients are on the 192 lines (which I think they are) then the average would be much lower.

Yeah best answer would be if you use a weighted average based on revenue per product. (Telkom does not release that kind of info though). But as you say i would imagine the bulk of users would be on 192 and 384 lines.

yup thats what i think, in the end they were left with 384kbps close to 192kbps prices and then decided not to reduce 192kbps since it would drop their overall profit by alot. /Since after all alot of people use 192k cause its the cheapest.

Makes me wonder what the future holds.. I mean they will have to push faster speeds on Adsl soon but then if they go about it as per normal nxt time they will push a upgrade each time to effectively retain their profit but appear to be cutting the cost of adsl. ie keeping the low cost price the same.

I have heard this story over and over.

Untill ADSL line rental is gone, the cap is gone or set to a > 60 Gb and cheaper bandwidth prices. I will not be HAPPY!!!

Ok. Why don't we get a poll to find out what percentage of MyADSL users use whichever service. Then you can re-apply your formulas to determine the mean average. I think it would be an excellent reflection, as this is potentially a very large test group to garner information from. Of course, if the Poll is started by RPM and made sticky in several forums, perhaps we will get a larger *turnout* so to speak.

They took the TOTAL of all the reductions and divided it by the TOTAL of all the access costs to get 24%... What a bunch of fricking morons. Geez, talk about making statistics work for you!
