How to check data bundle balance on MTN contract?

I've just switched from MTN prepaid data to (MWeb) MTN contract, and I can no longer check my data balance using the previous *141# or 555 with the SIM in a cellphone.

Apologies if this has been asked before but I couldn't find an answer: how, now, do I check my (500 MB) data bundle balance without trying to crack the USSD route through my E220 which I have never yet managed? Surely there's a simply way for contract customers? Or am I being naive.....

You're being naive. Data contract on MTN sucks donkey balls. I'm eagerly waiting for my contract to end so i can go back to prepaid. It's much much more useable.

a] You get ZERO warning when going out of bundle, and then get hit with out of bundle rates [unlike prepaid which will actually shut down when money runs out].
b] Their billing system is a confusing mess [and you'll get surprise bills all the time]
c] You are forced to check your balance via

1] 16202, which requires the USSD thing -and- a passkey...constantly
2] The slowest most annoying website ever. You have to go to the ends of the darkest corner of their silly website [MTNSP/MTNactive] to actually check your balance.

Why they can't just freaking put it on the FIRST PAGE when you log in is beyond me.

d] All methods in [c] gives you OUTDATED DATA...unlike prepaid which is realtime.

So yea, good luck. A Data Contract at MTN sucks, terrible system, terrible billing..just plain FAIL.

[yes it's hostility you sense, i've complained about this for 1 year now,...less than a year left on my contract fortunately].

On that note, i recommend Vodacom Prepaid if you just want something "that works" and do not require stupid work arounds [aka buying 3 prepaid MTN sims to continue buying bundles when you use up bundle too fast]. Yes, that's right i'm on a freaking MTN Data CONTRACT and have to buy prepaid sims to "top up" if my bundle is used up before month end ...stupid stupid stupid.

And remember that contract bundle only shows the previous day's balance unlike prepaid that shows up to date balance. This is to ensure that you go over your bundle on the last day and to p*ss you off when you get your bill.

MTN should have a website like the Vodacom4me website, where u can, contract or prepaid all, check airtime and data bundle balances, load dbs etc.
This would work well for me to check status's of our users, instead of having to get the sim, put in phone, check up.
Guess MTN not planning this soon?

And I thought it was only Nashua mobile subscribers that couldn't check their bandwidth usage on MTN... Is it MTN customers full stop? Extraordinary... They could be ripping the public a new one and no one would be any the wiser...

@ ginggs I got this message after entering the *162*pin*1# prompt...

Sorry. Only MTN SP customers can use this service. Please call your service provider for further information.

I presume this is because my service provider is Nashua Mobile...

Anyway around this?

Hi all,

Brilliant! Just press *162*password# and follow the onscreen prompts to get balances etc (Sorry, MTNSP only).

Hope it helps.

MTN is in a race to get as many subscribers here and abroad to beat the competition. Our market is nearing saturation, so my opinion is they concentrating on expanding abroad and nothing we complain on here for the last year or so will have any effect on them.

I hate very single service provider so I'd suggest to anyone to go for VC prepaid. MTN is still in the dark when it comes to that.
