How to get Telkom FTTH line without data?

Interesting read.

I'm another PE guy and looking to go Fibre. Telkom (overhead) apparently finished and MTN (trenched) is still busy finishing.

Thanks to this thread, ISP Afrika's month to month was brought to my attention - thank you.

Have you guys decided on which provider and packages you'll be going for?

I missed out on Vox's Friday Frenzy. I'm still trying to figure out what direction to head in.

If you aren't constrained by your budget, go with Crystal Web. They are just fantastic.

I'm going to have to switch to Afrihost for fibre. 200GB capped account is R399 and you can double the data with Afrihost Plus for R99. So with the R729 line rental that's R1227pm for 400GB. Most affordable Telkom FTTH I've seen.

Crystal Web and Afrihost have uncapped midnight data, which makes a big difference for downloading.

MTN in Linkside / Mill Park? They have abandoned that project and have moved to Walmer.

That sounds pretty decent. Considering I'm currently paying R499 for 4Mb line and uncapped account from Axxess, then add in the R200 odd for telephone line - R700 a month, I'm looking to move over go Fibre and enjoy the speed.

Obviously the biggest concern is that most providers are doing 24month contracts and I'm really not keen to get locked in.

Yeah... Strange though that we still see the contractors here and when I spoke to one of the guys during the week, all sounded good to go.

Either way, I wasn't planning on going MTN for a number of reasons.

It's a case of figuring out who to go with for the Fibre "line" portion and then the data side of course.

That's really interesting. I'm surprised it took so long. That Supersonic FTTH really isn't a competitive offering, so it was madness to offer it where Telkom FTTH was being installed.

The MTN contractors are definitely still hard at work here in Mill Park though. Perhaps they're just finishing up the streets they've already started then.

Considering the grief they've caused thus far, it's going to really make the affected residents here despise MTN even more when they find out the project was abandoned.

Both the ISP Afrika and Afrihost contracts are month-to-month. If the ISP Afrika one is 24 months though it won't bother me. It's an unbelievable price and you get a router and 10GB account basically as freebies.

Ah, you're also in Mill Park - the contractors have caused a ton of grief for some - thank goodness with everyone else's moaning, by the time they got to our street they knew they better not screw up.

Wish I had got the Vox Friday Frenzy yesterday...

Yeah I live in Mill Park. The MTN guys have already gone past my house. Didn't cause much damage though - our gardener moved bricks in the driveway out the way for the trench, and elsewhere in the front was just grass.

I checked the Vox special and didn't see accounts of sufficient size for my family. How much data do you need?

Stay alert... I think you'll see more such specials before year end!

Well, we can manage if we move onto 200GB a month (with midnight uncapped). I suppose with better scheduling I could squash that down further, but we not streaming as much as we used to, so I might need to rethink that.

Either way, I'm trying find a good balance to work around with for now, until prices drop further.

Afrihost's 100GB account is R199, and R99 for Afrihost Plus takes it to 200GB. R298 for 200GB is pretty good? And the Simfy account you get with AH+ is worth R60pm.

Sounds good. I couldn't seem to see Afrihost's Fibre offerings - doh.

I was hoping there would be a comparison type website that would make the research a little easier - seems I need to sit down and do some more homework.

Afrihost doesn't have a fibre section on their website. Any account will work on a FTTH line though. Capped accounts run as fast as your line supports. They say up to 40Mbps is supported, but it's been confirmed many times that they go to 100Mbps.

That does seem pretty good. So one could say, ISPAfrika 100Mbps for R729 and then Afrihost R298, a total of R1027. I see ISP Afrika charge the R1710 installation fee of course.

I see Web Africa are doing 100Mbps Fibre with 100GB data and 1TB midnight to 6am for R1048 - yes, you lose 100GB during the day data but no charge to install (there they absorbing the R1710 installation cost).

Sorry, I realised I had a blonde moment after posting that - apologies.

Paying for the installation is good value, as is the 1GB monthly mobile data if that is included as suggested on the Vox page (Afrihost Plus gives 500MB though). However, 2.4TB of data over 2 years is worth far more than R1710 to me. Also, the Afrihost midnight data is uncapped. On 100Mbps, you can download far more than 1TB a month using that. 7.7TB is the theoretically max.

Lol no worries.

So @Bryn and @MickeyD. Telkom testing today and tomorrow? :D

When and who are you guys ordering with? I emailed ISP Afrika and will see what they have to say.

I'm in Glendinningvale on the other side of Cape Road... no FTTH for me.

Ah. :( Our offices are on the same side as you, between Mount Road and Albany Road and find ourselves in the same boat. We landed up going with Vodacom's Wireless Broadband Connect 10Mb/5Mb uncapped option.
