How to get Telkom FTTH line without data?

So @Bryn and @MickeyD. Telkom testing today and tomorrow? :D

When and who are you guys ordering with? I emailed ISP Afrika and will see what they have to say.

ISP Afrika of course, otherwise the 50GB Vox option.

What did you ask ISP Afrika?

So if I'm not mistaken (after reading through all these posts), the answer to:

"How to get Telkom FTTH line without data?"

is

"You don't"

right?

I asked if they had coverage for P.E as they are C.T based and their website only speaks about certain areas in C.T.

I had a reply from Garth who said the following when I gave him my address - "Your address is feasible for Telkom FTTH". He also warned, "Lead time from receiving application form: 1-3 weeks
Please note that the lead time can vary, as it will depend on whether all fibre work has been completed correctly on site. We have picked up on some installs where this has not been the case. This will delay the process."

Seems to be the case.

Fortunately there are still some decent options:

1. ISP Afrika 100Mbps line + 10GB data for R729pm. Even better than getting just the line from Telkom for R849pm. Incl. free router.

2. Vox 100Mbps + 50GB data for R919pm. For not much more than R849pm you can get a line. Incl. free router.

3. Web Africa 100Mbps + 500GB data + 1TB midnight data incl. free router & installation for R1748pm is the best all-inclusive deal I've seen. The free installation is worth around R1.7k.

I'm trying to keep costs as low as possible, so I'll be going with ISP Afrika and Afrihost. R1227pm for 410GB @ 100Mbps. Don't think it gets cheaper than that for a high usage 100Mbps account.

Thanks for the info, although I would have been very surprised if there was an issue getting an installation. As long as we're on the Telkom FTTH system it should be fine for them.

Really hoping that installation takes place quickly.

I wonder if an ADSL line falls away automatically when you get Telkom fibre?

I doubt it, both of them can coexist with each other (that's what the contractor told me the morning when they
finished installing the splice box on the pole in my yard) so you'll need to manually cancel the ADSL :)

Although, this is just my own opinion, maybe things have changed have changed since then :o

Why would it? It's a physically independent access medium. I'm sure you could cancel it in accordance with your contract terms.

I wouldn't expect them to clash with a fibre provider other than Telkom of course. Just wondering for the case of Telkom FTTH, because both connections will be on Telkom's system. Seems silly to allow DSL and FTTH simultaneously by default.

I'll obviously make sure my DSL line is cancelled one way or another.

Would be silly of them to automagically cancel it for you when they can carry on billing you:whistle:

Do you know if there's a cut-off date in each month that line cancellation requests must be received by?

There's no way of knowing how quickly Telkom will install my FTTH, and it would suck to either have no internet for a while or to have to pay 10Mbps line rental for a month for no reason.

My customers talk of a 30 day notice period for their adsl lines. I haven't heard of a specific cut-off date in the month though.

I hear you on the timing. We try our best to stick to cutover dates and try to fit in with the 30 day period when asked, don't know if telkom can assist though.

I'm thinking I should submit my application with ISP Afrika tonight...

How's your application with them coming along? I phoned them and I'm slightly concerned about the scale of their operation. They seem like a tiny establishment.

The guy with them who deals with Telkom FTTH isn't available atm, but they said he'll contact me. I'll be sure to ask if the line can transfer back to Telkom if there are any issues down the road. I'm not even sure if they'd be managing the line on my behalf at all - I just assume so as I would expect to only be paying them and not Telkom directly.

While not yet loaded on our website, we will from today allow customers to obtain a Telkom fibre line from us via our support channels.

However we won't be subsidising these lines in any way...

That's really good news! :D

Can you confirm the prices? Is 100Mbps indeed R849pm?

Is there a free router? If not, do you sell routers? If not, do you know what router fibre customers should be buying?

How much will installation cost?

Indeed it is...

Is there a free router?

Confirming with them but not likely. We won't provide free routers without a contract and data...

Any router with a WAN ethernet port will work. We're busy finalising our range at the moment...

How much will installation cost?

Great question. One Telkom have not been able to provide us with yet...

@DJ. Possible to give us the "line only" Telkom FTTH prices ? I have not seen these published anywhere as yet.

I can give you ours, but cannot speak on behalf of Telkom:

Fibre 4Mbps – R439 inc VAT
Fibre 8Mbps – R499 inc VAT
Fibre 10Mbps – R539 inc VAT
Fibre 20Mbps – R639 inc VAT
Fibre 40Mbps – R739 inc VAT
Fibre 100Mbps – R849 inc VAT

Just when I thought I knew what options I was going to go with.... haha. Decisions decisions decisions.

My ISPAfrika application has been forwarded to Telkom for processing. They said Telkom will contact me to arrange installation.

I'd love to get every aspect of my connection from Crystal Web, but I'm trying to reduce monthly expenses as much as possible. R729 month-to-month for 100Mbps from ISPAfrika incl. a 10GB data account I can use as a backup is just too good to pass up.

I ordered a fibre router from Web Africa just now for R1.8k. The Zyxel SBG3300-N. Better price than I saw elsewhere.

So these are Telkom fibre line-only prices via Crystal Web?
