How to (start to) eat fish

That sounds doable - and cheaper than a fancy restuarant. :)

That hill you have to climb, is more like Mount Everest ;)

That was the plan.. I didn't see the point in doing a fancy restuarant and wasting the money.... Get to enjoy the basic simple fish before moving on to exquisitely prepared fish, where they will try and highlight the flavours of the fish etc etc....

You know you've made it with being able to do seafood, when you can enjoy some sashimi from a fish that was caught 5 minutes before.... it was one of the best things I've ever eaten tbh.

Im all about seafood and I would be missing out if I didnt eat it.
I think you should choose your fish carefully though.
Avoid Tuna, Salmon, Butterfish, Kingklip, Trout and any other strong flavoured or darker coloured fish.
The white meats are less fishy generally and the safest is probably going to be hake.
Try gradually dressing it down though to see if you can handle the flavours.
Once you start to enjoy fish then the really good ones like Salmon, Dorado and Tuna are hard to beat.

IzZzy, I agree with ToxicBunny. Another advantage of going to a specialist fish n chip shop is that you can order a small portion. To start with, do not let them add salt and vinegar; rather get a sauce and season it yourself. NOT with tomato sauce!!!

If you were in PE I could organise you a few different varieties (free) so that you could find one that you would enjoy.

Have you tried a calamari steak yet? Or Lobster tails? Or is your issue with "fish" per se?

Hmm. My next step was going to be a grilled hake instead of crumbed. Must try fish aways sometime this week!

Thanks for the offer :) Nope, haven't tried anything like that yet - thought I'd start off small. My good friend dives for crayfish and has crayfish braais every so often - I'd be the only plonk bringing a steak to a fish braai :P

Salmon is not a specific species, but rather a collective family name for several species of fish, including trout. In SA we usually can choose between imported Atlantic salmon or local rainbow trout. Both taste and look the same, both will work for the recipe, but trout should be much cheaper.

Salmonid is the collective name, and only the steelhead rainbow trout has the pinkish colour that gets them confused with proper Atlantic salmon, which comes due to their sea migration. I used to catch freshwater rainbow trout and it's a whitish meat. I know the first part due to some hasty googling just now.

Were those not stocked trout?
The trout I catch are normally quite similar coloured to salmon but definitely dont taste the same!!
I always found salmon to be more pinkish and trout to be more orange.

No they were from a brackish estuary in Texas. Yes I'd say more pinkish now you mention it. Delicious, muscular fish and great sport to catch.

Not allowed, If I was having a fish braai, red meat would be verboten on the fire.... no exceptions!

Mmmmmmm, must get some more langostines actually, the ones i had on the fire this weekend was lovely.

@OP,

Unlike you I will occasionally eat a lil hake or maybe tuna, but there is no way I will eat roached and other bugs from the sea

Yeah maybe try something other than the "boxed" variety of fish and you'll find a completely different experience waiting to be had.

IzZzy, how about starting off with fish burgers? Buy some crumbed fish and make a burger.

The braai option is another great one. Don't dive in the deep-end just yet with fancy restaurant fish...

Fish burgers are a good option. Hmmm :) The braai is not so easy anymore since I no longer stay by the sea...

Something to set up when you're visiting friends by the sea ;)

Sea food used to make me gag, now I quaff down oysters and love them. The smell of sea food made me sick. I got over eat after some Indian dude made prawn sandwiches and the curry/spices disguised the smell and gave me a chance to see how good the meat is.

IzZzy take advantage of your generous clients with corporate credit cards & go to the grand. You can sample fish of all sorts.:p

Why force yourself to eat something you don't like? What is the point?

Fish is really good for you and you are really missing out on some amazing meals.

There is very little I don't eat. Its great... I can enjoy a lot of stuff. Having a versatile pallet means I never have to worry what is being served.
I never have to embarrass my self at someone's house when they offer me something good that I can't pallet.

Its the most amazing freedom in the world. Quite liberating.

I don't get how people can live this life and only eat 3 things... typical rys, vleis and aardappes.

+1

One wonders where the mind block comes from? I will try everything with great enthusiasm, some things I might not like but there is very little that will make me gag.
