I get precious little news about my old home here in blighty and was wondering how the plans for 2010 are going.

Considering it's under 2 years to go, I'm wondering how SA is going to pull this one out of the bag.

With the recent AIDS news hitting headlines in the UK (Yep, only really bad news about SA is seen over here), along with the increasing problem of illegal immigrants in SA, I've noticed a complete lack of any updates on plans for the Soccer World Cup.

Over here in the UK, there's concern for the 2012 olympics. Considering the new Wembley stadium was massively over budget and delayed to such a degree, it was laughable, we do wonder how on earth London is going to be ready.

Considering the UK is a far wealthier country than SA (not that you'd notice it sometimes), and more advanced (again, you can't always tell ;) ), it would seem that SA doesn't stand a snowballs chance in hell of holding a successful 2010 event.

Cape Town has begun building the stadium, despite all the objections.

A new dedicated taxi/bus lane has been opened on the N2 for the taxis (yippee). No other transport changes have been made.

The police have done squat and said squat about it, so crime will still be a problem.

Apart from that, not much has happened.

They are using Newlands as a soccer ground and it is causing a LOT of traffic problems - the Metro police are not coping with even a local match.

... did you ever consider that London doesn't appear advanced because many things there are run by emigres. (just a thought)

The only story is the stadium story: there is no other concern about 2010. The 'constant updates' of how 'we will be ready' have faded away (got embarrassing.) Syd had the last word: the only thing that will stop 2010 is a natural disaster, an act of god. ;)

Um stadiums. Yes the stadiums will be built. Other than that we have NO OTHER PROBLEMS! :D

//oh yes; and Selebi sleeps well at night, no concerns about 2010 (unlike your own commissioner who doesn't, worrying about security for the olympics.)

Well, OT International Airport is goin through some rough changes, and its lookin good so far

Things are progressing - a little slowly but they're moving along. My brother is a contractor working on the Gautrain project and he reckons they're ahead of schedule. Crime is naturally a concern - especially now that violent crime seems to be escalating.

My concern is the political situation: There's going to be an election and a new president before the WC - will that shake things up a bit? I think it will.

I'm not sure if the election will make much of a difference, we don't really have real election s in SA in that the winner is effectively decided at the ANC conference.

I thought that the Gautrain project was not going to be bundled in the WC2010, and that the WC was not a motivator for the project.

So many conflicting stories.. I just wish they hurry up and have a awesome WC2010 and put the nay-sayers in their place.

Stadia all on track, some even ahead of schedule. By on schedule all stadia will be complete by October 2009.

The real worry is carrying out the planned transport infrastructure with enough time to be able to deal with issues around transport during the event.

Stadium completion dates.

Bloemfontein - October 2008
Pretoria - December 2008
Ellis Park - December 2008
Rustenburg - December 2008

Nelspruit - April 2009

Nice stuff capetown guy :D Do you know if anyone is doing any time lapse filming of the construction sites?

alanf, this thread isn't about you're half-empty views on the country. Please leave it be.

Its weird that people think that money spent on stadia somehow affects funding for housing. The problem with housing is not a lack of funding but the incompetence of various parties to actually spend the money. We don't have funding issues in South Africa at the moment, we have underspending issues.

 When did they move the 2010 WC to 2009?

Construction has started on all stadiums, even in Cape Town.
@Fudzy: i know there was a plan to do this, and in PE Transtel has cameras overlooking the stadium construction site, but these aren't web-accessible. :(

Stadia must be complete by November 2009 to be handed over to FIFA in January 2010.
Many people are confused about reports that raise concerns about being "ready". Ready meaning 2009 and not June 2010.

Correct. The confederations cup which features all continental champions is played on the eve of the world cup as a dress rehearsal for the big event. Everything needs to be ready by then.
