HP Compaq NX7010

So will I notice a difference if I put 2x 1gig sticks in?

Another question, can I just put one 1gig in the meantime and have a 1gig and a 256mb?

You will only notice the extra ram if you actually use it and run out of RAM. 1GB and 256MB should work fine, and will be much faster than just 256!

Hi Pooky...

You will indeed notice a difference... immediately with 2x1GB chips.

Yes, you can put 1GB+256MB sticks in, I just can't remember if the bigger chip has to go under the keyboard or not... I think it might make a difference where the big chip goes... give it a try.

If it does not POST, then just swap them round.

Hi Pooky...

That RAM looks fine.

The DDR333 is about it... no higher... and no slower than DDR266.

There is only the 8 cell battery for it from HP... but I have seen generic external things for notebooks that plug into the power jack.

I was quoted R1700 for a new replacement cell for my nx7010 last year from HP........... :(

Good luck

I need a spare battery for this. This is the type it takes: http://cgi.ebay.com/Battery-for-HP-...ItemQQptZLaptop_Batteries?hash=item45f02f237f

Is that the only capacity one can get, or is there a super dooper extra power one?

Also will 2 of these sticks be fine? : http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=485_405&products_id=12790

(I can't put any other type of RAM other than DDR333 can I?)

I'm going to install Windows 7, but I can't find any drivers for the laptop, what can i do?

Heey Pooky

Windows 7 runs quite nicely on the nx7010.. EXCEPT for the ATI 9200 graphics. There are no Win7 drivers for it, thus you only get basic, non-accelerated, no aero functionality. The drivers that worked on for me were the latest ones for the nx7010 for XP from the HP site....

So are you saying there is no way to get proper graphics, or that the XP drivers will work?

From my experience... no way to get graphics acceleration. You will get the proper resolution and full color... but will have to go to the "troubleshoot tab" in the graphics properties and slide it down to the 2nd notch on the left - turn off all acceleration - or it will freeze when playing video and randomly blue screen.

There are no updated Windows 7 drivers for that graphics card from ATI, and all the mods and work-arounds never worked. I found the most stable drivers to be the "latest" from the HP site with the acceleration turned off or to the 2nd notch.

Other than that... the nx7010 and Windows 7 worked like a dream with 2GB of RAM. I never had any problems, even the Windows 7 betas worked.

So, if you need the full direct x and graphics bells and whistles, you will need to stick to XP.

I'm not going to be playing games on the laptop, just use it for normal use eg. office, and photoshop.

All I want is for it to look decent..... Can it play video ok?

It should indeed... well, I could on mine without problems.

Just install the drivers from the HP site... and if the laptop freezes or BSODs during video playback, slide the controller down to the 2nd last notch on the left under the "troubleshooting" tab of the display options.

I really had no problems with my nx7010's and Windows 7 apart from the initial display driver issues. It just needs at least 1.5GB-2GB RAM.

Pooky,

Considered linux? I have a lesser spec laptop than you and run Arch + KDE4 on it and it is snot fast & looks good. Photoshop can be installed via WINE.

I have tried many distro's of linux and I just can't get used to it. I like it, but not enough to use it everyday.

Plus I am wanting to run programs such as Torq and Ableton which I cannot with linux.

Fair enough.

I purchased 2gigs of RAM from Sybaritic about 2 weeks ago, still waiting. :(

You could always phone Esquire on Monday and ask them if they have stock of their Transcend DDR400 1GB SODIMMS and if they do cancel the Sybaritic order, selling for R359 ex VAT I think.

Apparently I ccan't put DDR400 in my computer, it has to be the DDR333 that I have ordered.

I can't seem to install the ATI drivers from the website, it says I can't, and when I go to device manager, I can't see the display adaptor to update them manually?

That's the biggest load of bollocks I have ever heard. Higher speed ram is backwards compatible with lower speed, it just gets clocked at a lower frequency.

I replaced the DDR 333 ram in my lapto with DDR 400, I'm actually running two mixed speeds in there, they are both clocked at the lowest common denominator 333MHz.

Last Friday I installed DDR2 800 in a DDR2 400 laptop, no problems, also running mixed speeds there. If I had to purchase the DDR2 400 memory it would have cost 3-4 times as much.

Don't get suckered.

Oh my serious!?!?

So if I put 2 sticks of ddr400 it will be faster? Earlier on someone said I mustn't go faster than ddr333
