Got someone to pick up the 220 for me and just saw it's got the double width LP bracket :(

Can always cut it, so not too big an issue but now I'm worried about the power consumption. What happens when you mate a higher TDP card with a lower power slot? Will the card be managed down, will it just not work, will it result in something overheating and going into nuclear meltdown?

Maybe one should go the other way for the XBMC player? Anyone tested the AMD APU based solutions? Like this one:

I quite like the idea of the HP MS as the NAS and a very small factor player. Looks like you can get a very sexy little system up for around R2K.

Nothing will overheat, the system will just become ridiculously unstable and as soon as you put the card under any load that requires more juice than the 25W made available by the slot, things will go wrong end up for you. Do yourself a favour and just get a 210. I run one on my system and it works perfectly for everything up to ~16GB 1080P files, which are the largest I have.

Look, the issue with AMD display adapters, integrated or otherwise, is driver support in Linux. You get XBMC for Windows as well, so things will work fine with that. Unfortunately, that means you're running Windows, which isn't nearly as elegant as running XBMC Live.

Should work TDP 27W, would be stuck with the same driver issues in linux though. Also make sure the heat-sink is small enough before buying I've seen some big heat-sinks on them around the net

The openelec developer released a version for the fusion APU's in a nightly build the other day http://www.openelec.tv/component/k2/item/188-working-vaapi-xvba-for-amd-fusion-devices-added.. He has an AMD fusion board and if you read posts in the forums there, he seems to be quick to help if something doesn't work.

Otherwise you'll probably also have driver issues with xbmc live... The nvidia Ion boards would definitely work but the AMD does see a better platform, pity about the drivers..

Looking at playing more over the weekend and giving linux a run but shouldve had this running ages ago, dont know why I keep running into problem :/

My luck the network cable is probably faulty hahaha........

Now to find a 210 that'll fit.....

I grabbed this one from esquire and it's working 100% (ubuntu+xbmc)

I sourced my 210 from Prophecy. I spoke to Henk there and told him my requirements and he contacted their suppliers to check whether the available models would be suitable. It didn't come with the low-profile backplate, however and I got a tad fed up with trying to find one that did. Will look into modifying the backplate that came with it this weekend, since I actually have time now. I don't foresee any issues.

Ps. Keep in mind that not all cards have the same sockets at the rear, so not all brackets will fit your card.
 
Okay so a friend dropped off a copy of WHS he was no longer using just so I could get the server up and running for now right.
So install it, had to install network drivers and chipset drivers all that toot. Use the connection CD, all fine and dandy, connects and life seems good.

WHS asks me to reboot, and so I do.
Now.....it aint posting, turns on and everything, hdds spin up but no power seems to be going to the keyboard (which is backlit so I sees when it comes on) and getting no signal to the monitor......

To I just have a skill for frakking things up or what!!
 
ouch topca7 I really don't know, but from reading some threads, check out the ahci/ide setting in the bios that may be one of the problems, as whs v1 did nto have the ahci drivers and you would have to slipstream it.

Wild Guess, but by no means correct, it's just one place to start.

I am personally waiting for my technet activation to be completed then I will grab me a copy of whs 2011 so I can run a VM for it.
 
Where can I get hold of one of these in Pretoria?

I am sure someone on Carbonite forums supplies these in Gauteng. If you read HERE, you will see someone supplies in East Rand, so I am sure shipping from there to you shouldn't be too hectic.

What's wrong with HPshop? I had great service from them. They are in Jhb or Midrand iirc but they deiver nationwide.

Have freenas 8 on a flash and tinyXp and neither made any chance :/
Thing gets frikken power just dont want to do anything else!!!

Time to test out HPs rma!
