Apologies if this has been covered before...

As I understand it, HSDPA access was free (apart from your per meg charge, of course) at first; then it changed to a per-month subscription.

But I've noticed (on my shiny new phone) that I often seem to be using HSDPA, without having subscribed to it. So is it still free, or is my phone reporting the wrong thing?

There are two (soon 3) different HSDPA products.

1) HSDPA-1.8 (1800/384) is part of any normal data bundle and this what you will get if you have a HSDPA device and only pay the bundle fees.

2) HSDPA-3.6 (3600/384 or 3600/1400 if you have a UPA capable device) is where you pay R49/month extra. But you should only do this if:

2-1) You have the correct device.
2-2) Have a substantial better performance on 3.6
2-3) Need faster download and upload speeds (who doesn't? :))

So you don't subscribe to HSDPA per se, you just get it. But yo DO subscribe to HSDPA-3.6 with UPA.

Backhaul capacity remains a problem, but it has already been reported that Vodacom is rolling out 7.2 Mbps. We tested it a while ago and the results we very encouraging! 2 GB will however not last long with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 1 Mbps HSUPA!

Is there still a facility for people to try out this service, if for example, they didn't have a 3.6 HSDPA device or UPA device while the previous trial was on?

Yup. Here's hoping that between all the fibre going in and Seacom on the way those caps will get bigger...

It will greatly help but we must not create the expectation that it's going to solve everyone's problems overnight.

There are still thousands (upon thousands) of links all over the country that are awaiting upgrade from our friendly, local telco and all you know any service is only as fast as its slowest link.

Crash Test 7.2 Wizard

Not really, been thinking how to do this, At this point I guess you need to commit for at least one month.

In sickness and in health -- for richer or for poorer [Need I say more:D]

Anyway ; there is GOOD news for anyone with a NOVATEL EXPEDITE embedded device. (EU870D)

These CAN be upgraded to 7.2 ( and I think HSUPA ) via a firmware field upgrade.

I am in the process of getting that firmware from the Novatel Europe and ME agents.

So soon , I will be primed , ready and RARIN to go V7.2G ( Sounds like a V8)

Looks like I will soon be submitting my support IN-VOICE to DELL --{ you listening -- kNOCK KNOCK -- anybody there :( ]

the EXCITED one
