HSDPA Speed Tests/Review

Ok, I've got a Novatel! :p

Just did the SpeakEasy test as well, and the results confuse me:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 199 kbps (24.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 310 kbps (38.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

How is that possible? :confused:

Redid the teklom test (with only one bar!

* Download time: 9.359 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 435.9 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 53.4 (kiloBytes/second)

Quite a bit better than the first one!

Two seperate speed tests at the Vodacare shop in Canal Walk at about 13h10:
got 567 kbps and 797 kbps on the Telkom test. Pity the laptop they had on display didn't have Java installed so we couldn't run any of the international speed tests.

Browsing felt much faster than on 3G. Pings to our company's site in Germany was around 400ms. Local pings ranged from 90 to 150 ms.

I am picking up HSDPA here ! Whoo hoo! :D

Amazing stuff.. got about 120 Kilobits per second on the test...
For me never having experienced anything better than GPRS it's amazing .. almost scary (the way it uses up credit :D )

It's gonna suck going back home to GPRS... :(

120 kilobits ? I assume you meant kilobytes ? 120 kbps is 'average' 3G speed [not HSDPA]

HSDPA Speed Test

After more than a month without 3G (and even upgrading to the HSDPA in April to try and resolve the problem) this morning I have been connected for more than 38 minutes (and counting...)

Thus finally it is time for a speed test:

Speakeasy 382 kbps download and 0 kbps upload (I assume it is my fire wall or something..)
Telkom Http 353 - 752 kbps. It increased after a number of reloads and then settled at around 752 kbps.

Looks like my card is only giving 2 blue blimps. Can't I force it to go to HSDPA?

You must be on HSDPA to get 752kb/s.

As internaut said, the card will 'idle' in 3G but as soon as you rev it up, should switch into HSDPA, with a triple blue flash (if the Option card).

Thanks V3G, since starting this morning the speed just kept on increasing... and also (unbelievable) I did not have any downlink stop problems either.

Siemens Tech also just left - he came through to sort out my problems of the last 6 weeks, but seems like someone fixed the problems overnight! He was disappointed tha the could not find anything though, but I was very happy since my connection has now been sorted overnight.


In conclusion: I am now a happy HSDPA user. Max Speed seen today is
1,3Mbps!

( When on GPRS at my home here are the results ):

So its quite impossible to work on GPRS so i end up sitting at a window.......
EDGE would be perfect
 
just had a thought: what if it is the HSDPA card which is performing bad on GPRS, because i definitely remember better speeds on GPRS using the old 3g card...remember even seeing over 60kbps...
so i tried my N70 here...over GPRS...same story DU METER shows speeds of 2 kbps , 11 kbps and max 22 kbps whilst doing the TELKOM speed test - actually cancelled the test as it ws taking too long...would probably bring an average line speed of 8 to 10 kbps....

so problem is not HSDPA card but the GPRS network which has slowed since....?
i suppose that has to be checked and if that works then thats fine ( but i would really appreciate an UPGRADE for this area to EDGE as well ) ( GPRS to 80 kbps wouldnt be bad either and EDGE at +/- 200 kbps would be WELCOME! )
 
Just got my new Novatel u740..Fun!!!

These are my results from Plattekloof Glen Cape Town

* Download time: 3.718 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 1097.4 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 134.5 (kiloBytes/second)

Question: How do you know when the Novatel u740 is on HSDPA except for the obvious speediness?
 
Not good at all today (Sat, 6 May 2006, Olympus, Pretoria with 2 bars on the dash, proper 3G connection):

- telkom page timed out on first attempt
- 2nd attempt: 57.9 Kbps
- 3rd attempt timed out again
- 4th attempt: 53.2 Kbps

- the speakeasy test
LA: 57 kbps download, 53 kbps upload
NYC: 43 kbps download, 11 kbps upload

dear, oh dear ...

btw, the LED on the Novatel U740 card is Blue at the moment (non flashing). According to the manual, that means: Your card is currently PDP context activated on the UMTS system.

Whatever does that mean?

hey..u got a manul for the card? thats for the Novatel..no manual for the option....only got a manual for the VMC software with the option...Anyone with the Option card got a manual for the card itself which explains all the flashes and functions?
