HTC directionless

Okay- i read and felt your posts. I was planning to buy myself an HTC S730 but im a bit sceptical. Im already rude, im allergic to dealing with rude customer service.

Should i buy the device or should i wait for the iPhone?

Tough one mate... the iPhone is said to get here on the 20th of next month at a dirt cheap price, but being in sunny south africa, expect to pay double and wait another 2-3 months while Vodacom "Network Tests" the phone.

as for the HTC, I love my TYTN II :P The S730...well, its an average phone with no great features, no GPS, nothing besides HSDPA 3.6 to speak of...wait for the 20th and see what the word is...if noting , look at the Black Berry Curve, decent phone, just no 3G.

If the iPhone is a bust, this is def my next phone:

only problem is, it will only be released in a few months.

You know what, HTC and LEAF will really have to up their game. I am not a big fan of the iPhone fanfare, but it might throw the market into a spin.

On the paying double thing, I refer to an article on The Register, my other favourite IT resource:
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/06/09/apple_unveils_3g_iphone/
The following quote:
"Apple said the 3G iPhone will be rolling out in some 70 countries over the coming few months, with 22 nations getting it on 11 July. Jobs promised that wherever you buy the 8GB model, you won't pay more than the equivalent of $199 (£101/€127)"

So, if the iPhone goes for expensive, we know that Steve Jobs is trying to dethrone Bill Gates in the role of Satan. R1600 for the 8gb and R2400 for the 16gb is roughly 1/4 to 1/5 of the price someone I met recently paid for the thing. I don't want to like it, but at that price (if Steve is not messing with us South Africans) what is not to like? It is less than half the price of the iTouch!

This will turn the market, throw it in turmoil, and make the iPhone a common thing on African streets, which I don't think is a bad thing. Besides, the way Steven Dollenberg from Toys and Technology keeps flashing his around whenever I see him around, it can't be that bad..What's happened to the Samsung I say:-P

I await HTC's response:D

The Iphone 3G will have more or less the same issue.

It doesn't come with turn-by-turn navigation software built-in. It also uses Google Maps to show your location.

TomTom have apparently leaked that they have adapted their software to work on the Iphone, but of course you will have to pay extra for that.

Is your username because of that new Supercomputer? lol! Just checking!

What else will work on the iPhone? But also, I mean, I want turn-by-turn navigation when I have gps in my device, be it a fruity device or a window cleaner thingy...I still prefer Windows as it is the environment I usually work on at work, and why not phone too...But once again, I'd rather settle for a phone I can run multiple OS's on. If it looks like the Iphone but I can use my WM6 apps on, great!

I wonder who would make a handset like that, a multi-os one. I know Apple will never allow their OS around that way, but if I could get an HTC that runs Windows Mobile 6 and can run Android if and when available, I would be so happy:-):):):)

You win 1st prize! :D I was wondering if someone is going to call me on that one.

Only time will tell what the hacker community is going to come up with. If there is a large demand for running WM6 apps on the Iphone 3G, then I am sure someone will do it for brownie points.

Erm, I am looking for a trial version fof Garmin etc, for my Tytn11 , too.
I am a new to this where to please direct me?

WhooHoo! What can I say Roadrunner, I read too much some days:-)

Google "Garmin trial" and see what you can get. I am a little lazy and out of cheap bandwidth:-(

Why not get a real GPS?

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 610 from Makro for R2999 - including Africa streetmaps on a SD card. It has Bluetooth for using with a phone as well. It doesn't need to be stuck to the windscreen - I've got mine attached to my fascia next to the steering wheel and it picks up at least 7 satellites perfectly giving an accuracy of +/- 4 metres.

Most useful 'gadget' I own!

When I got my tytn2, there was a little glossy card in the box that told me where to go and download my free navigation software... Okay, it wasn't built in - it communicates with the server now and then - doesn't use much traffic, but it's still free navigation software - Leaf Locate - and it's actually pretty damn good I have to say.

So everyone comes off looking dumb here - the chap lodging the complaint for not seeing the glossy thing in the box, Leaf for not pointing it out, and ASASA for taking some idiot consumer at his word.

Have another good look at Leaf Locate. It does not use the GPS hardware built into the TyTn II. Otherwise it is quite good.

the nokia n95 8gig also does not have proper mapping software, so i should complain as well then. :D

the nokia 6110 navigator is better than the n95 in terms of gps.

they have a great product but the service is sh@t. If it breaks you can wait for at east 6 weeks for feedback. a friend of mine had the touch and it stopped working after 2 months. He took it in and 4 weeks later they told him it cannot be fixed so they replaced it. When he got the phone it had a lot of phone numbers on it.
Turns out that it is a used phone that they gave him. It look him 4 months to sort it out.

Exactly - this is the key point that some people seem to miss.

Nav4All seems to be a reasonable alternative, but (like Leaf Locate) it downloads maps on the fly, so every time you recalculate a route it needs to get the data from the server. I don't know how much data it uses (I'm guessing only a couple of kb each time), but at R2 a meg it could get a bit pricey.

SORRY!?!

Nokia Maps is perfect, use it all the time, no hassles, no problems, navigation (for ZA) comes free of charge with the 8GB. Whats the issue? The Navigator uses some other cheap navigation software :D

nokia maps is crap on my nokia! no routing no voice and the map does not rotate around, the 6110 win hands down. nokia maps vs route66 nokia loses that one.

HTC is not guilty! Just use AmazeGPS. Free. It can even recalculate routes on the fly. Something that Nav4All (not free anymore... used to be) cannot do. Absolutely great software. I have used it on TyTN2 before.
