I seen this deal on MTNDirect and applied for it. A consultant phoned me and confirmed the order. The subscription is R100 per month. There are 2 errors on the website though. For R100 you get R100 airtime and not R200, and there's no free data included. Typical of MTN, this isn't the first time I experienced this with them. It still is a good deal, I think. BTW what is the value of a brand new Dream?

That seems a bit strange.

Do you get the phone free on a R100 Topup account?

I'd take one anytime!

That website reads as 100MB free data as well?

So R100 Airtime, 100MB data and a free phone? Seems suspicous.

The Dream can probably be sold for around R3k.

According to the consultant there was an error on the website and this deal doesn't include ANY free data. For R100 you get R100 airtime and there is NO pay-in. I confirmed the no pay-in with him twice. He also said that CLI is not included on this deal, so that would be around R9 extra.

Just got confirmation that the contract was approved. I already have an MTN contract so the credit checks etc wasn't a problem. This will be the first time I'll be using an Android phone, so I need to start doing some research.

I called twice, two different stories from two different consultants. One said the deal has been put on hold indefinitely and the other said the status of the free data bundle will be confirmed tomorrow morning, as a few contracts have come with it already. So we all might just be in luck! Any chance of a white one?

So how much will you be paying exactly, and what exactly do you get?

R108.50 incl. call line identity. Free phone, free sim and connection, free delivery. I want to phone them again today to check on the free data thing.

Is there a website link or number to call?

Faaaaak...

I'd sign up in a blink if I didn't have a G1 already :(

~R2.4k for the phone and talktime over two years :(

It is cheap, even though the phone was released a few months ago. For R109 pm I don't think you can get a smartphone with a touchscreen and qwerty keyboard. Even the Nokia 5800 is R139. I just hope there's no catch or mistake. I don't like surprises on my cellphone bill.

I think they are trying to get rid of excess stock before the HTC Hero becomes the Android phone to get. I dont think the dream has sold well, as android wasn't marketed much before the HTC Hero.

And the Dream was the first attempt at an Android phone. There have been significant improvements in eavh of the two following devices.

When you say improvements, do you mean in the hardware or the OS. I'm working under the impression that if I get the G1 I can upgrade the OS so that it equates more or less to the Magic and the Hero.

I'd love the Hero but I need a tactile keyboard.

Leaf are selling the Dream for R3900, and the Hero for R6700, so they are probably trying to clear stock. I still think it is worth it for R100 pm. Besides, I need the extra airtime.

Even though they look different, the hardware is mostly the same. The only real worthwhile change was the additional memory they added.

The Hero also has an uprated camera and 3.5mm jack.

I wanted the keyboard, which is why I initially got the G1/Dream.

The memory might soon become a real problem, but until then it's still awesome.

Why would it be a problem?

Later firmware version might not be able to fit onto the interal memory, and your apps might no longer be able to run at the same time due to RAM size.

Rooted phones have the option of running something like Apps2SD that allows you to mitigate this somewhat, and I've even created a small 32MB virtual memory to help memory issues slightly.

As soon as your RAM usage approaches 100% the phone gets very sluggish as it starts to more aggresively swap out apps.

Dream 192 RAM / 256 ROM
Magic 288 RAM / 512 ROM
Hero 288 RAM / 512 ROM

I'm pretty sure there was an earlier verion of the Magic that had different amounts of memory, but the one we get locally is 288/512 IIRC.
