HUAWEI B315s LTE router discussion thread.

From the point of view of router stability, I have had some "lock-ups" over the past 6 months specifically when my router at home has locked onto one of the other towers in my area, with a lower signal and then just stayed on that tower, until I have intervened by rebooting and it then goes back to the tower with the stronger signal. So I am hoping that this is one of the issues that as now been resolved in terms of stability on the new router firmware.
And for the record you also experienced this:
I also noticed that over the past 4 months I would get a signal degradation on the B315 after the router had been connected for extended periods of time. Basically the signal would drop off by 2 to 3 bars from full. This would stay like this until the router was physically powered off then on again. Just the other day I noticed that a firmware update was being pushed out to the B315's and one of the issues reportedly included is stability over long term connection, so lets see if this firmware updated fixes the issue. Any one else experienced this?

I signed up for the uncapped Telkom LTE promotion and received the B315 router and external antenna last week Tuesday. The sim was activated within a few hours and I had an uninterrupted LTE-connection (just using the bunny ears) that night, both on my laptop and Samsung phone. My download history shows about 1.3GB for that day.

The next day (and ever since) I have been unable to connect to the internet at all. The router doesn't show LTE speed anymore, it shows either the blue 3G or green 2G light, but I'm still unable to connect to the internet (with any of my devices).

If I take out the simcard from the router and pop it back in, I'll see the LTE light for about 10 to 20 seconds when I switch it on again (during which time the internet works), then it switches to blue (internet disconnects) and eventually to green, where it then remains.

I have logged multiple calls with Telkom and have tried the following steps to no avail:
- resetting the router (both reboot and factory reset)
- changing the APN from "internet" to "TelkomInternet" (different call center agents have different opinions as to what the APN settings should be)
- performed a sim-swop at a Telkom store
- checked that the sim is successfully RICA'd and activated
- manually connected the Poynting antenna - it makes no difference
- upgraded the firmware
- popped the sim into a phone to see if it connects (it doesn't work - no mobile data when I try this)

I have requested a technician to visit my house, but this process can apparently take 7 to 10 working days. I'm trying to launch a business from home, so I'm pretty desperate to get my internet up and running as soon as possible.

Have any of you encountered something like this or have advice of what other solutions I should try?

Go into the mobile connection option and set preferred mode to "4G Only"

It seems your signal is dropping to 3G. Which is what the router does normally when the LTE signal is low, but because the uncapped deal is LTE only, it does not failover correctly

Hope this helps

Firmware 21.313 from Cell C brings new option in /api/dhcp/settings:
<response>
<DhcpIPAddress>192.168.8.1</DhcpIPAddress>
<DhcpLanNetmask>255.255.255.0</DhcpLanNetmask>
<DhcpStatus>1</DhcpStatus>
<DhcpStartIPAddress>192.168.8.100</DhcpStartIPAddress>
<DhcpEndIPAddress>192.168.8.200</DhcpEndIPAddress>
<DhcpLeaseTime>86400</DhcpLeaseTime>
<DnsStatus>0</DnsStatus>
<PrimaryDns>8.8.8.8</PrimaryDns>
<SecondaryDns>8.8.4.4</SecondaryDns>
<ShowDnsSetting>0</ShowDnsSetting>
</response>
You can see that router is already in manual DNS mode and Google DNS servers IP's show accordingly.
When trying to change option "ShowDnsSetting" to '1' router restarts immediately and it is the right things to do, as it allows every client to renew DHCP parameters (including new DNS servers). I suggest when changing DNS options on the router to reboot every client or issue a command "ipconfig /flushdns" to make sure that old cached data for name resolution is cleared.

Now after restart querying /api/dhcp/settings do not show any changes, but PC adapter properties show real DNS IP's!

I had problems at times with DNS relay, so it is a good news. By changing this option B315s do not pretend to be DNS server anymore, but real DNS IP's are passed to all clients via DHCP.

Why Huawei didn't chose to use standard words "Disable DNS relay" like in other routers? Well DNS Relay is still operational, you can configure clients manually to use Huawei IP for DNS server and it works. See below:
Code:
C:\>nslookup
Default Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com
Address: 8.8.8.8

A couple of users reporting "bricked" routers after latest firmware upgrade. I would suggest to do the firmware upgrade only via ethernet to be safe!

bricked means failed firmware upgrade. To such extend that router can only used as a doorstop (or send back to telkom)

I think David was about upgrading firmware over Ethernet cable connection as more safe comparing to the pushed update from the Internet, but I wasn't sure.

Connect to the router via ethernet from your PC/Laptop rather than Wifi and perform upgrade with pushed update from the internet.

Looking at the price of this router now, it really seems like all the places (CNA, Jet, etc...) that were selling it previously, had the wrong price for it! I bought mine for R999.

Not sure. I bought B315s from Cell C with Giga200 package for R999. :)

Yo guys, i got the b593s but the actual problem i have is that i can't use any other networks, when i search for other networks they show as forbidden, is there any way to make these networks open?

I have an 8ta sim with the Telkom package 50gig but the signal here for 8ta is useless.

With an 8ta SIM, all the other networks will be forbidden. So just get some prepaid SIMs from the other networks and test each of their signals. Though not all networks are supported by the 593, check the first page of its thread, against your specific model B593-****.
I don't think any of them support Cell C. I have the s601 which handles MTN/Afrihost and Vodacom.

This has happened to me, updating firmware of router and the laptop was on wifi. I was prompted a firmware update and I accepted. It downloaded the 60+ mb update and installed till 99% at which point router switched off and never came back on, remained with the power light on only.

Tried restarting router with the power button and nothing. I then tried combination of buttons even trying the hard reset at the back and still nothing. So now I have booked it in with Edgars since I bought it through them, the wait now begins...

Indication of factory mode. Proper action was to use Multicast Tool and upload firmware locally. On page 11 of this thread there are links to tutorials.

Now router is not in factory mode anymore. You would need to enter factory mode again to fix problem, but it is not so simple with the latest firmware version. Send it back to Huawei.

Multicast tool do not look for a particular device. It sends multicast packets and router is supposed to pick it up. Some people don't want depend on multicast facility passing over different LAN segments, and suggest to configure your network card for static IP in the same LAN segment. It is why I gave you IP address of the router (for a sake).

The work on multicast tool is simple:
- Run Tool and chose your LAN (wired) Ethernet interface card.
- Select the file with firmware and press start button.
- Observe lights on the router (refer to links on the previous page).
- When lights indicate it is finished, press Stop button and continue with terminating factory mode (if it hasn't been already).

I see that in some cases it goes to USB green mode and you have to connect router by USB cable and issue AT commands. In other cases router restarts in normal mode.

If router is still under warranty, I would take it to the service, of course.

Going to test this now on one of my routers. I have three of these coming into my home and 2 upgraded fine, 1 looks like it has bricked. Resets did not work. Only the power light coming on. If I hold the reset button ot the power button in for 10 seconds the power light does flicker just once. I have the exact same sypmptons as the person you were responding to. I did firmware update (and I do regular dd-wrt installs, so used to this) at 99% it hung there, left it for 4 hours, came back, was still there, so thought it might be the javascript percentage marker that was broken, rebooted only the power light comes on.

Is there someone else with the file? I can not download the file without being spammed to death.

I cant get at that file, so if anyone has it anywhere else, please let me know, whoevr uploaded that file is as shady has heck. I dont think ive ever been spammed so hard. You cant even get to the file with spamblocker.

So, if someone has a copy of the file, please let me know. I am unable to download it through the spam on that site. SAJunky, another of my routers symptons are when I plug in the network cable, windows does not show a link.

I would like experiment on the bricked one. If you want do it yourself, I downloaded original 21.311 firmware file for Telkom B315s directly from Huawei website (when it was still available). PM to my Email.
