HUAWEI B315s LTE router discussion thread.

I think @sajunky is right actually.

I am in a similar situation so I'll give a few notes that might help. This is if you force the 4G connection and either get no connection or such a weak signal that your speed is painful. (I have had both of these)

- An external antenna (Poynting or otherwise) doesn't magically give you a good signal if plugged in. a) It can give you a worse signal if it's more directional. They need to be set up right, usually on the roof. Telkom were including that install with the package originally, not sure if they still are? The sooner you can get that antenna set up the better b) Sometimes the router doesn't recognise it and you have to change the Antenna setting from "Auto" to "External". What you can do until the proper install is try the antenna and point it out every window and slowly change direction, at the same time as monitoring the signal from the router & waiting for it to update. This is after forcing 4G of course. You are trying to maximise your signal because it helps your internet speed. For reference, if I can get RSRP as high as -110 and RSRQ to -13 then I can get 1-2 Mbps download. For most people these would be dire, but it's that or nothing for me at the moment.

- You can also try the same experiment with both the internal and bunny ear antennas by setting the relevant antenna setting & moving the router around your house, particularly near windows. Unlike most others, I've seen a better signal on the bunny ears when I'm really struggling to get a signal.

- I bought a Poynting (XPOL-0010) for about R500 which helped me. But I did still have to hunt around massively for the signal.

Thanks everyone for helping. Forcing 4G and manually selecting antennae settings cleared up the issue. My LTE signal is on one out of five bars, which is why it's constantly trying 3G/2G fallback. I've roamed around (and on top of) my house with the Poynting antenna, but it looks like I'll need to wait for someone to install it properly.

At least I have internet connectivity now - much appreciated! :)

PS: if anyone receives conflicting APN advice from Telkom's call centers in future - the default APN setting of "internet" on the B315 modem shipped with the uncapped Telkom LTE package works just fine, no need to change it to "TelkomInternet".

Got a B315 today from Telkom store for R1306. Feel a bit sorry for Computer Mania who sell it for R2600. I wonder why Telkom are selling it at such a good price. Perhaps they are generally trying to move people away from ADSL?

Subsidised price. Combined with the current "Uncapped LTE" promotion, Telkom is trying hard to get people onto LTE (and fixed-line products that have a future!).

The bunny ears / antennas is for wifi broadcasting, not to pick up mobile signal.

Does anyone know if you can restrict bandwidth to a specific device using the MAC address like some other routers can? To give them a limit, say 2GB a month.

Thanks

The bunny ears are not for wifi broadcasting- they're specifically for mobile signal.
If you purchase / receive an external poynting antenna, you connect the antenna to these 2 ports and under antenna settings, you force the router to use external antenna 1 & 2

No, you can't, there no monthly limits per device, nor QoS to restrict bandwith. There is workaround. You can set monthly limit for the router. When router cut off, you can blacklist traffic offenders, then re-enable traffic for the good guys. Sorry, no other way.

How would you identify offenders? Does it list data amount per IP?

Also, can you tell me where the setting is that turns off the connection at x GB?

1. Not possible at the router.
2. Statistics -> Data Plan. Set "Monthly data plan" and "Threshold"

Thats all you can do with this "Gateway router". If you want QoS and full user control, get a real router, put it in B315s DMZ option and connect WAN port to B315s LAN port by cable. Then you will have full control over Internet access on this router.

I do have a couple of Netgear routers I picked up cheap/free - the DGN2000 and the WNR2000, but I haven't had time to test them. Will try to give it a go at some point.

I got this push message few weeks ago on Cell C router and upgraded unfortunately. With 21.313.03.00.1232 (Cell C) you get:
1. USSD menu
2. NoIP DDNS is now possible
You lose:
1. In LTE mode Cell_ID is not displayed on the E5186 Toolbox main page. Not tested in 3G mode.
[-]1 API access is restricted (E5186 Toolbox not working anymore), so you can't set manual DNS on this router. For Unotelly users it is really bad news.

API access is still working. Do you think I would mislead you? I was receiving "Wrong session" error (pictured) when pressing 'Connect' button. Now I realised there was something wrong with Windows 10 when Toolbox started crashing on the startup. Reinstalled Win7 from image and found that Toolbox is working again! Microsoft claims:
Don’t blame the Framework.
The first thing you hear is usually: – This has to be a bug in the framework. I can almost assure you that it isn’t. It’s usually cache, code or configuration that’s to blame.

Can you use E5186 Toolbox on the Telkom version of this firmware?

Thank you from feedback about Telkom version of 21.313 firmware.

I assume this is done already. What is your experience like now? I did this I'm highly upset because my signal stats have plummeted with this new firmware. Before the upgrade I was gett RSRP of -106 and SNR of 15 with speeds up to 40mbps. Now I'm seeing RSRP of -113 and SNR of 7 with speeds hitting 7mbps max. I want the old firmware back and I've logged a call with Telkom. I only did this this morning before work so I haven't had time to play around with router and antenna placement, but with the router in the exact same spot as before and after the upgrade, I can't see why the signal drop stats should change that drastically.

For the record the old version is 21.311.03.01.372 if anybody out there can help me with finding it.

Did mine last night, everything working exactly the same.

@Maik do you have info on whether it might have connected to the wrong tower?

Nothing as yet. Waiting for one of the technical guys to contact me now. But I'll play around with it tonight to see what I can get. I'm within range of 3 towers and I'm pretty sure I've connected to each of them at one point or another. Never have I had signal and speeds as bad as this though.

Please let me kow if you receive a copy. Regarding downgrading firmware, use E5186 Toolbox (if still working on this version of firmware) or directly "B593s-22_Multicast_upgrade_tool.exe" by switching to "USB green mode".

This link gives a starting point to dowgrading and debranding tutorials.

What language is that? It's interesting, with some English mixed in.
